Group Overview: MASSC, the Male Abuse Survivors Support Circle, is to our knowledge the only support group in Santa Fe for male survivors of abuse: sexual, physical, emotional, therapist-caused, or religious. Most men never deal with their abuse histories. We tend to stuff down the feelings of rage, pain, fear, hurt, self-loathing and loneliness abuse creates in us. The only trouble is that the effects of the abuse tend to surface anyway: in self-damaging behavior; addiction; self-isolation; intrusive violent or condemning thoughts; inability to form and sustain healthy relationships; even suicidal tendencies. Some of us even identify with our abusers to the point where we become abusers, too.
MASSC's sole purpose is to provide a safe place for abused men like ourselves to find support for living a happy, healthy, non-self-destructive life. MASSC is not allied with any religion or therapy program. The group is run by us survivors; no therapists attend. Membership is entirely free and entirely anonymous. MASSC follows a 12 Step model of recovery inspired by the Alcoholics Anonymous program, but you don't have to believe in or like 12 Step groups to attend and participate (and nobody will be preaching to you) . Another important note: We won't touch you, even to shake your hand or give you a hug, without your express permission, and if you refuse permission, we won't be offended. And you don't have to tell us your real name.
If you feel you may have been the victim of abuse, whether as a child or as an adult, check us out Saturdays, 11:30 am-12:30 pm, at the former Church of Religious Science building (now called the Center For Spiritual Living) on Camino Los Marquez in Santa Fe. (Don't let the fact that we're meeting in a church stop you from checking us out. MASSC is not a Christian organization.) Camino Los Marquez is the street parallel to Cordova Road, east of St. Francis Drive and north of the mall where Trader Joe's is located. Go through the righthandmost door into the main lobby, walk past the big bookshelves, and hang a left through the kitchen into the meeting room beyond.
