The Order of the Cauldron of the Sage

Age Range/Type: Family
Located in: Bloomfield, New Mexico
Key Contact: Janie Felix

Spiritual Path: Eclectic Wicca
Status: Established Group
Community Support: Open Circles... Teaching Available

Group Overview: The Order of the Cauldron of the Sage is a small eclectic Wiccan coven that hosts open circles and classes. Members are both men and women, and are mostly Wiccan but include other pagan traditions as well. The eight Wiccan sabbats are celebrated with circles that are open to all interested parties. The coven also offers classes, which are also open to anyone who has an interest in paganism. The High Priestess of the Order is a 3rd degree initiate of a Gardnerian coven, the Order of the Cauldron of Melissa, located in CO.

Sabbat Celebrations

Each of the eight Wiccan holidays is celebrated at the home of our High Priestess, in Bloomfield, NM. These are held outdoors if at all possible. Typically these rituals will be held on the Sunday afternoon or evening that is closest to the calendar date of a given sabbat, in order to accommodate people who work. Rituals are contributed by the students in the degree classes, and are conducted by coven members. They generally include an activity and the sharing of food and drink, and sometimes may include elements of meditation, chanting or music, a craft, etc. Non-alcoholic beverages are ALWAYS available.

Classes are offered two evenings each month and are structured according to the Gardnerian Wiccan degree system. The first year of study is open to all interested students, and counts as the “Dedicant” year for those individuals who intend to join the coven formally, or is equally of benefit as an “Introduction to Wicca and Neo-pagan beliefs” to students not yet certain of their path. There is no charge for classes, but a donation of at least $1 to the Four Corners Goddess Temple is required each class session from each student. Class entails approximately 12 “homework” assignments and a heavy emphasis on discussion and interaction among students and teachers, and cover numerous activities and subjects related to witchcraft, Wicca, and pagan spirituality.

Our major project at this time is fundraising and planning for our own permanent sacred space, the Four Corners Goddess Temple. This all-faiths, open air building will be constructed on land owned by the coven, and will be built by members of the coven and their friends and family in an environmentally responsible way. Although not yet complete, our plans involve construction methods such as adobe bricks, papercrete, and reused colored glass bottles. We do know that it will have a central fire pit, and therefore a central hole in the roof to let out smoke, as well as sides open at the cardinal directions. Fundraising is necessary for construction of the temple, and to meet this need the members of the coven have worked together to sew and silkscreen canvas grocery bags that we sell at events, over the internet and by word of mouth, all of the proceeds of which go directly to the Goddess Temple Fund.

The temple will be located 20 miles south of Bloomfield, NM and will be open to the public as a spiritual retreat where any deity may be honored and where one may go for meditation, prayer, and general peace and solitude. It is located in the desert and will have access via a well-traveled County road. The building will be maintained by The Order of the Cauldron of the Sage, and will be accessible to patrons at all times.

Canvas Grocery Bags

A photograph of the bags (equal in capacity to 3 or 4 plastic grocery bags) can be viewed at . They are made from off-white canvas and are printed in either red or black ink. The text reads “saving our mother one bag at a time” and reflects several important concepts: our desire to treat nature as though it were sacred (which, as pagans, most of us believe it is) ; our responsibility to do whatever we can, no matter how big or small it is; and the fact that it requires the same amount of petroleum to make 12 plastic grocery bags as it does to drive a car 1 mile. The most comprehensive and understandable discussion of why we should stop using plastic grocery bags that I have been able to find is this page: . It is mainly talking about Canada, but the overall content is comparable to use in the United States.

We are fortunate to have several shops in the local area that carry books and supplies useful to pagans. One of these shops is owned by a member of the coven, The Maiden and the Crone in Aztec, NM. Rituals and classes are most often held at the home of our High Priestess, in Bloomfield, NM. The coven participates in community events when possible, including Octoberfest and the Animas Blues Festival, both held in Aztec. A portion of the fundraising money earned at these events is donated to a local charity, most recently the Aztec Animal Shelter. Rituals sponsored by the coven have been known to draw participants from Durango, Blanco and other Four Corners locales.

If you live in the Four Corners region, or will soon be moving there, we would love to get to know you and we invite you to celebrate with us!
