Group Overview: Reading Pagans & Witches is a Non Profit Organization serving the Berks County (Pennsylvania) and Greater Reading Area with a focus on celebrating Pagans & Witches as well as other nature-based and alternative faiths. We are founded for education and community outreach purposes. We achieve this by providing a place that is open to all, regardless of their individual beliefs, and as a growing haven to advance pagan ideals non-invasively to the wider world, but with the principles that Pagans can be, and truly are, a viable, vital, and valuable force.
We began in October, 2004, as a discussion group and a face to face social gathering for the local community. From our meager beginning with only one person at our first meeting to having almost four dozen people attending our meetings less than a year later, our group has grown and evolved. In January 2009 we incorporated as a Non Profit organization in the state of Pennsylvania.
Meetings: We have two regularly scheduled meetings a month. We meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, starting at 7:00pm. Some things you will find at both meetings include prayer circles, information on events of interest to the community, and updates on the group as a whole.
The meeting on the second Wednesday is at the Muhlenberg Rec Center, and is a more hands-on meeting. Here is where we have done such things as made incense, soap, prayer beads, and held rituals.
The meeting on the fourth Wednesday is at Borders Cafe in Wyomissing. There we talk about everything from what’s going on in our community to more structured talks on different paths, divination, candle magick, etc.
Events: We hold four events each year. Our three festivals and expos include a mixture of music, entertainment, ritual, discussions & lectures, children's activities, healers, readers, and vendors with spiritual wares. In late January we hold the Imbolc Gathering & Expo. Early May will find us hosting the PA May Faire. In the autumn we have the Celebrating Earth Spirituality Festival. We end the year each December with the Yule Ball , where guests dress in everything from cocktail to full formal wear to Renaissance gear and come out for a great evening with music, dancing, food, and friends.
Community Service: We are currently involved in community service projects, including Pennsylvania’s Adopt-A-Highway project and working with Berks Women in Crisis and the Berks AIDS Network/Co-County Wellness.
Activities for Families/Youths: At Reading Pagans & Witches, we endeavor to include family-friendly events in addition to our more mature oriented activities. To that end, we have two distinct groups. Family Time-Out Circle: In June of 2007 we started the Family Time-Out Circle (FTO) . This is a group of families from RPW who get together for field trips, children's learning circles, and plain old fashioned fun times. The members of FTO learn about spirituality through play, stories, and crafts. This group is geared primarily towards children aged 10 and under and their parents. Youth Exploring Spirituality Circle: At the end of December, 2007, we formed the Youth Exploring Spirituality Circle (YES) . YES is a group for the 11-16 year old tweens & teens of RPW members. It is a group for kids to learn about spirituality through discussion, collective research, and workshops. It is primarily self-moderated and self-directed by the kids. It is not specifically about Paganism but literally Youth Exploring Spirituality.
Our Youth Groups have done many things outside of our monthly meetings including camping trips, picnics, and field trips to youth days at the PA Ren Faire & Crystal Cave. In the winter we get dressed up and have fun at the Junior Yule Ball.
