Group Overview: The Well of Shadows Tradition of Witchcraft is an emerging tradition of non-Wiccan, American Witchcraft. We are a tradition that strives for a balance of light and dark in our practice and worship, with the acknowledgment that our members naturally tend to gravitate toward the darker end of the spectrum, and we work together to embrace that power, and to bring it into balance with the light. Our theology is based on a panentheistic and dualistic view of the divine, and we work with deity as male and female, light and dark.
We are an initiatory tradition that is heavily emotion and relationship based. We place a strong emphasis on intimacy, community, and the significance of our initiation bonds. While we stress the importance of every witch maintaining a strong solitary practice, our tradition is built upon a desire to share our paths, push one another, and contribute to the spiritual growth of our tradition and coven brothers and sisters while we pursue spiritual growth of our own.
The spirit of the Well of Shadows Tradition is one that is heavily influenced by Shamanism and tribal culture. In addition to working with the God, Goddess, and the traditional elements, we also frequently work with and honor the ancestors, our totem energies, and spirits and guides of the other realms. Our practices tend to be high intensity, with a heavy presence of wild, warrior, and primal energy, and a central focus for us is that of pushing boundaries and chasing Awen. While we do value “tradition, ” and our members will share in the same set of tradition rituals to mark certain milestones on their path, and are held together by the same spirit and general set of beliefs, for the most part we encourage our members to adapt their practices to what is relevant to them at any given point on their path. We believe in a fluidity of practice over rigid structure and ceremony, and encourage our members to be creative on their path in a constant pursuit of wisdom, freedom, and empowerment.
Our ethical code is the Motto of the Fianna. For us, this code applies to life, relationships, and our magical practice. This is the only ethical code we have regarding the practice of magic, and we believe that the main guiding factor in any witch’s magical practice should be that witch’s own internal moral compass. We believe that Witches should practice magic ethically, but we also believe that they should be able to develop and rely upon their own system of morals and ethics, and we do not believe in rules that impose upon the free will of any Witch to practice his or her Craft. Our magical style tends to be more practical than ritualistic, and more aggressive than passive. In the group setting, magic is practiced as needed and used as a practical tool, so if you plan to join a Well of Shadows coven, it is important that you find out about their magical style and are certain that you will be comfortable with it.
It should be noted that, though our members may naturally gravitate toward darker energies, we are empowered by this connection, not depressed by it! We do not wish to imply that we are all somber and morose, and that we can’t find enjoyment in life. On the contrary, we have a great deal of fun with what we do, and we believe our spiritual practice should bring joy, enlightenment, and balance into our lives.
