An Open Letter to Dictionary.com: Religious Bia Against Pagans?
“atheist” “infidel” “profane” “filthy” “foul” “obscene” “faithless” “godless”
We’ve all sat down to write a blog article or school assignment, right? What is one thing that you reach for - a dictionary or thesaurus. Using an online reference source is quick, easy, and painless - unless you happen to be Pagan or Wiccan, that is!
Dictionary.com has seven (7) negative stereotypes and over 114 thesaurus synonyms for Pagans. By contrast, the Christian definitions and synonyms are positively glowing. Of course, there are no working synonyms for Wiccan nor Wicca. (And don’t get us started on the synonyms for Heathen!)
As a result, the Wiccan Interfaith Council International has sent a letter of complaint to Dictionary.com, and their parent company IAC. We have also posted the letter and the entire contents of the Pagan and Christian references on our website for all to see. Visit our website to read about this visit to the Dark Ages, and then post your thoughts on our Facebook page.
* The Weaving Traditions Journal is now available:
The WICI is happy to announce the publication of our new journal, entitled, "Weaving Traditions: A Pagan Pathway to Worship".
It's now available to order for $12.50 (price includes shipping/handling) * through our website at:
Created by our WICI membership, this educational journal is an introduction to the world of Wicca, suitable for newcomers into the Craft, as well as their family and friends.
It is also an excellent resource for prison ministry and community outreach.
