Cuups held the Sunday discussion group in the Unitarian House on "Paganism" at 9:30 AM on Sunday March 30th.
Through UU Adult Religious Education "Cakes for the Queen of Heaven" mini seminar will be offered in the Fall. The Goddess is a potent image in contemporary Paganism. Many Unitarian Universalist women were introduced to the Goddess through the religious education classes "Cakes for the Queen of Heaven" and "Rise Up and Call Her Name". Some women have chosen to focus exclusively on images of the Goddess who may be maiden, mother, crone, teacher, lover, healer or death bringer. Briana will be presenting the 13 week workshop "Rise Up and Call Her Name" later in the year.
On December 22nd 2007, we held a potluck/Solstice celebration at First Unitarian Church of Lynchburg. "Full Circle" CUUPS members presented Sunday service on December 23rd 2007 at 10:30AM announcing and celebrating it's creation and birth. We look forward to the nurturing and eventual maturing of this entity. Blessings to All, Cathy & Briana
The Diversity We Celebrate
God images, male faces of Divinity, are also very much present and a part of modern Pagan culture. Some women embrace the complement in a polytheistic view of male Gods, who might be young, old, wise, tricky, strong, or physically challenged. This multifaceted view of Gods provides an insight many women seek in their relationships with men.
Although a significant minority of women on the Pagan path choose to explore their spirituality by worshipping exclusively with other women, the majority of contemporary Pagans commonly worship in mixed gender groups. Many Pagan groups explore the partnership of Goddess and God, using governance models of equality and shared leadership.
The Wheel of the Year
One of the sources of Unitarian Universalism is "Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature." This reflects a basic source of contemporary Paganism, too.
Modern Paganism draws from many cultures and traditions. One major influence is from European Earth-centered traditions celebrating the Wheel of the Year.
Through the joyous and thoughtful celebration of the rhythms of the solar cycle, we are reminded of our connection with each other and with All There Is. With Unitarian Universalists, Pagans affirm and promote "Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."
