Temenos Gryphon
A WitchVox Sponsor

Age Range/Type: Adult
Located in: Arlington, Virginia
Key Contact: Leonidas

Spiritual Path: Minoan Brotherhood
Status: Established Group
Community Support: None Offered

Group Overview: The Minoan Brotherhood is a men’s mystery tradition with roots in British witchcraft (specifically Gardnerian Wicca) but without the requirement of gender polarity in magical workings and initiations. Our appeal is mostly to gay and bisexual men, but all men are welcome. In addition, we draw from Greek mythology and the religion of the ancient Aegean and Near East, with emphasis on Minoan and Mycenaean Crete. Our tutelary deities are the Great Mother Rhea and her son Asterion. It is also our divine duty to assist and protect members of the greater GLBT community even if we may do so from the shadows and without proper recognition. For a general description of the tradition, please visit

Temenos Gryphon is the only Minoan Brotherhood grove (our name for a coven) in the Washington DC Metro area, which includes Maryland and Virginia. We are located just across the river from DC in Arlington, Virginia. Although we honor the original teachings of the tradition as founded by Eddie Buczynski in the 1970s, the Minoan Brotherhood has evolved over the years and therefore Temenos Gryphon incorporates some unique features inherited from Temenos ta Theia (located in New Orleans, formerly Somerville, MA) or added via the research and experience of Minos Leonidas. We are also considered an honorary member of the New Orleans Circle of Traditional Witches (NOCTW) , a community of Gardnerian, Alexandrian, NY Wica, and Minoan witches in the New Orleans area.

Temenos Gryphon is open to sincere and stable seekers ages 21 and older. We normally do not offer long-distance training since regular participation in the grove is required. It can be a huge commitment for both the student and teacher if extra travel is involved. Anyone out-of-state who are closer to other Minoi will be referred to them, although we cannot guarantee that their grove will be run in the same manner. Beware those who proselytize or are too eager to collect initiates. Our inner court (for initiates only) meets once per month to celebrate the eight sabbats and full moon esbats which are similar to those of British Traditional Witchcraft or Wicca. Anyone interested in Temenos Gryphon should send a detailed message about themselves and why they are drawn to the Minoan Brotherhood. They should also include a link to an online profile or attach a clear photo confirming their identity. We need to weed out those individuals who aren’t serious, misrepresent themselves, or have ulterior motives.

Although the Minoan Brotherhood has been around for over 40 years and is an extension of even older occult traditions, we are still a relatively small and exclusive group that does not seek the spotlight. We are a spiritual fraternity or society of male witches, not an orthodox religion. The details of our tradition are oathbound and any explanatory materials presented in a public forum should be considered suspect. As in British Traditional Witchcraft or Wicca, we absolutely do not charge money to teach or initiate. However, members of the grove are expected to contribute toward the cost of food and ritual supplies within their means.

Temenos Gryphon maintains high standards in selecting its members, but also provides a safe and supportive environment in which worthwhile initiates may grow. How you represent yourself online must match your real personality when we meet. Sincerity and honesty will go a long way. Humility too. If you already know everything, then why are you looking for a teacher? Our current initiates also have a say in who I choose to add to the grove dynamic. We welcome men of ALL ethnicities and skin tones. We are sex-positive but not irresponsible or unethical.

As of July 2018, the students in our outer court have been initiated as members of Temenos Gryphon. Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate everyone who may express interest due to issues of time, space, and demand. Please contact Minos Leonidas via Temenos Gryphon ( directly for more information and to check if this status has changed. If you are a seeker too far from the Washington DC area, please join the Minoan Brotherhood Seekers yahoo group ( or search Witchvox.

Please Note: The Minoan Brotherhood tradition is NOT affiliated with any ultranationalist or ethnic polytheist organization or philosophy. The emphasis of the Minoan Brotherhood is on the practice of initiatory witchcraft by mostly gay and bisexual men of any ethnicity or skin tone, although we are open to all men. We are also devotees of the Great Mother (Earth or Nature) . The hateful and narrow-minded agendas being promoted by an alarming number of individuals in the greater occult and pagan/polytheist communities (including some who are gay) are anathema to the spirit of Eddie Buczynski, whose traditions were founded on the principles of democracy, liberalism, feminism, and equality for all.

Temenos Gryphon does NOT condone the irresponsible or illegal use of drugs. Our tutelary god is NOT the patron of cannabis. Temenos Gryphon does NOT condone the promotion of unprotected sex. Temenos Gryphon does NOT require anyone to perform sexual acts for any reason. Temenos Gryphon is NOT racist or tied to white supremacy. Temenos Gryphon will NOT tolerate fascist ideologies. Yes, we are only for male initiates. However, the Minoan Sisterhood also exists and is the other side of our tradition. There are lots of groups and traditions out there that may be a better fit for you. Due to the limited information available about the Minoan Brotherhood, a plethora of assumptions and misinformation has been going around about who and what we are. Please do not take the term Brotherhood out of context because despicable groups also use it.

Our Grove was formerly known as Temenos Khrysokeros from 2010-2012.

Excerpts from The Minoan Brotherhood website:

Is the Minoan Brotherhood for gay men only?

The Minoan Brotherhood is primarily a tradition for gay and bisexual men. However, it is open to any male of legal age who is free to pursue his own interests. Completely heterosexual men may not feel comfortable with the style, method of working or current of power within the Minoan Brotherhood. For those who do, the door is always open, and has been since the founding of the Tradition.

Do Minoan Brotherhood Rites involve sex?

Our Rites, like those of other paths of Traditional Witchcraft, can be sexually charged, and are decidedly homoerotic. Initiates are encouraged to study sex magic and eroticism. No one is expected to do anything non-consensual; however, people uncomfortable with nudity and homoerotic situations may not be suited for this Tradition. Sexual mysticism is a key element in Minoan magic, and so Initiates are continually developing themselves and their abilities.

What is the purpose of secrecy in the Minoan Brotherhood?

Mystery traditions keep their rites secret to preserve the impact for seekers, and to preserve the power of the Tradition. When awe is reduced to a sales pitch, and enlightenment becomes a commodity on a store shelf, then the magic is drained from life and the world. Secrecy works to preserve the sacredness and wonder of the spiritual quest.

Shouldn’t the Brotherhood be available to all?

The Brotherhood is available to those who choose to apply themselves to the path of study and evolution. Magic, and its associated mental discipline, can be used to harm as much as it can be used to heal or create beauty. Dedication to the path of study and evolution helps the student become properly prepared to work with the energies of magic that affect the student’s psyche and environment. We must learn to use fire correctly for it to be a constructive force. Similarly, shrouding the tools and rites behind the veil of Initiation works to ensure the safety of the student, and assures that only persons with appropriate ethical grounding, maturity, and commitment are given potentially dangerous esoteric knowledge. As in other Mystery Traditions, Minoan instructors function as guides and gatekeepers in this process. One cannot become a Minoan Brother without being taught by an appropriate teacher. Thus, though the Brotherhood is accessible to qualified applicants, seekers may need to wait until a qualified instructor is available.

In truth, the Mysteries themselves cannot be taught; they must be experienced. They are therefore exposed to the student over time, preparing the student to experience the true Mystery.
