Group Overview: Palo Briyumba is an Afro-Cuban religion derived from the many different African tribes who speak dialects of the Bantu language brought to Cuba from the 16th through 19th century. These tribes originated in what is now Angola, Congo, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo in west central Africa. This is an initiatory religion, meaning there is a strict rank system. As you progress from initiate through to high priest/priestess, you have more access to knowledge and hold greater responsibilities.

Palo is often considered an "amoral" religion, meaning that it does not have a moral code associated with it. This is true of many ramas or traditions of Palo including most houses of Mayombe. Our tradition of Palo Briyumba is different, we believe in the evolution of the human soul in concert with Nsambi, the Kimpungulu and the Nfumbe. Therefore, though we would take action to prevent or stop attacks against our Munanso, our families and ourselves, we do not however harm anyone including those who have done harm to us. Palo Mayombe and Palo in general have a reputation as being "dark" and full of curses, we in Palo Briyumba are working a path of evolution and healing, we are not a dark religion. We would not accept money or any other payment to curse people or harm anyone.

The structure and beliefs of Palo Briyumba are in some ways similar to other faiths of the African diaspora like Santeria, Haitian Vodou, Quimbanda and Candomble'. Palo is however a unique religion in its history, lineage, language and objects of religious veneration. There are 7 levels of hierarchy in the Palo religion, 7 possible steps of initiation. Not everyone will take all 7 steps; some people are only allowed to receive 2 or 3. It is the spirits that decide which people are invited into the religion and how far their journey can go. We discover the spirits will through divination and direct spirit possession.

In Palo, the Supreme Being is called Nsambi (also Sambi, Nzambi) and who created the Universe and spirit entities called Mpungu (Kimpungulu plural) that control the forces of nature. The spirits of the dead are called Nfumbe. We venerate them and the Mpungu for protection, health, wisdom, evolution, foundation and knowledge. The altar or object of our veneration is called the Nganga, a mini universe of spiritual power normally (though not always) contained in an iron cauldron.
Palo is a secret religion far less known in the English speaking world than other Afro-Cuban or African diaspora faiths. There are some books in English on Palo available now however, you can only learn a traditional Rama (school or lineage) of Palo directly from your Munanso (temple) and your godparents. There is no self-initiation into Palo. Many of these books contain mistakes, incomplete or obviously bogus material and you should beware. The spirits of Palo are not open to all and we do not recommend working with them outside of a traditional Munanso.

We offer help to those in need. Our services include personal and house cleansings, ancestor veneration and feeding, curse breaking, protection, spiritual evolution, and initiation into Palo Briyumba.
