Alberta Handfasting

Just a quick note for all those who may be interested....
In the past, Pagan clergy and community leaders in Alberta were permitted to do handfastings by obtaining a temporary Marriage Commissioners lisence. It allowed a Pagan couple to be married by someone they respected in accordance with their spiritual traditions/beliefs.
It should be noted that this practice is no longer legal in Alberta. The "grace period" for this practice ended at the end of September 2004. Those who may now become a Marriage Commissioner are limited to a very few people. In order to have someone else do your ceremony, the process is complicated to the point of being almost impossible.
Unfortunatly, there is currently no legally registered Pagan clergy in the province of Alberta, and therefore, one must go to a registered Marriage Commissioner.
A suggestion to any Pagans wanting to get married in Alberta would be to speak to available Marriage Commissioners and ask them if you would be able to write/design your own ceremony (in Calgary alone, there are just over 20 Marriage Commissioners.) Many are agreeable to this. In this way you can insure that your traditions/faith is respected without having to go through the hassle of trying to get around the new rules.
