BAGUIO, the GARDEN of the GODS
I wrote about this magickal city in one of my trips as a writer for the university paper when I was in college. I was fascinated by the landscape, the people, the energy and most of all the pine trees. As a Witch with Shamanic origin, I was drawn to the city which I see as one of the mystical places here in the Philippines. Aside from its scenic and historical spots, Baguio is the home of Shamans with a practice that can be traced back to the Tribes of the Cordillera.. (the Ifugaos and other Tribes which settled in the area~) The city with its mythical and mystical background is one of the most powerful nexus of magickal energies I felt around the country. The city is brimming with the powers of Nature, elementals coexist with their human companions, sometimes as guardian spirits to the individual or a place often ancestral guardians of a family. With the place's deep shamanic roots brimmed with the power of Nature and the Old Gods, no wonder this city is called by the the author of the petition (Dion Fernandez) as the Garden of the Gods when we met last August, 2003 (Forgive me Dion I forgot the name of Baguio in the native tongue) .
Baguio is situated amidst the mountainous region of Cordillera, 1, 500 meters above the sea, 250 kilometers north of Manila, Baguio City is one of the few place in the Philippines blessed with a cool climate. On average, Baguio is at least eight degrees cooler than any place in the lowlands. Not surprisingly, Baguio has become the "summer capital" of the country. It is gifted with a variety of cultural, historical and scenic attractions which make it an important and interesting destination. As early as March, tourists and locals take the six-hour trek up the zigzagging Kennon Road. Within a mile of the city, the sweet scent of pine trees and flowers already permeate the air.
Artists are particularly drawn to this serene city. The annual Baguio Arts Festival attracts aspiring painters and sculptors from all over country. Writers convene in Baguio to meet and recharfe.
When I read this message sent by one of my Wiccan colleagues in one of our online e-groups, I was startled to see the news that this page contained. Who in his right mind will do this to one of the most beautiful place in the country. Well some may read this article as anti-progress, but what is more than saving this cultural and historical landmark. After I read this petition letter, I vowed to myself that I will help Dion in his efforts to stop the impending destruction of a place I loved in such a short time that I stayed there. AN URGENT MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OF BAGUIO
ON FEBRUARY 1, 2006, A RECALL PETITION AGAINST BAGUIO
CITY MAYOR BRAULIO YARANON WAS SUBMITTED TO THE
COMMISSION ON ELECTIONS, GATHERING A TOTAL OF MORE
THAN 44, 000 SIGNATORIES. THAT VERY SAME DAY, FORMER
MAYOR BERNARDO VERGARA EXPRESSED HIS DESIRE TO RETURN
TO THE OFFICE HE LOST IN THE 2004 ELECTIONS.
IF INDEED MR. VERGARA RETURNS TO OFFICE, ALL THE GAINS
OF THE BAGUIO HERITAGE PETITION MADE IN THE PAST TWO
YEARS WILL BE REVERSED.
MR. VERGARA AND HIS "TIMPUYOG TI BAGUIO" PARTY WILL
PUSH THROUGH WITH THE CONTROVERSIAL BGH FLYOVER
PROJECT.
MR. VERGARA WILL PUSH THROUGH WITH HIS PLANS TO
COMMERCIALIZE SOUTH DRIVE AND ISSUE A PERMIT FOR
ROBINSONS MALLS TO PUT UP A HUGE SHOPPING CENTER IN
THE AREA.
MR. VERGARA WILL EXTEND JADEWELL'S CONTRACT IN THE
CITY.
MR. VERGARA WILL ISSUE A PERMIT TO PUT UP THE SM PINES
HOTEL AT LUNETA HILL'S ONLY REMAINING TREE-LINED HILL
SIDE, NOT TO MENTION THE SM WALKWAY WHICH HE DESIRES
TO PUT UP ALONG HISTORIC SESSION ROAD.
MR. VERGARA WILL ONCE AGAIN PUT UP HIS FACE ON TOURISM
ADS AND INSTALL HIS INFAMOUS "V" LOGO ALL OVER HIS
MUCH-MALIGNED INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS.
MR. VERGARA WILL REVERT TO A HIGHLY-COMMERCIALIZED
FLOWER FESTIVAL WHERE HE HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY SUPECTED
TO HAVE COLLECTED MORE THAN P10 MILLION PESOS IN
UNACCOUNTED RETURNS.
IT IS IN OUR COLLECTIVE BELIEF THAT SUCH A CORRUPT
TRADITIONAL POLITICIAN SUCH AS MR. VERGARA SHOULD
NEVER AGAIN GAIN A FOOTHOLD IN THE POLITICS OF BAGUIO
CITY. DURING THE PREVIOUS TWO YEARS HE HAS SHOWN AN
UNEQUIVOCAL DESIRE TO CLING TO POWER (AND ITS MONETARY
BENEFITS) AND MEDDLE IN BAGUIO POLITICS, PUSHING
THROUGH HIS TWISTED VISION OF A HIGHLY URBANIZED YET
HIGHLY OVERCROWDED, UNDERCULTURED AND OVERPOLLUTED
CITY. THE BAGUIO HERITAGE PETITION WILL NEVER ALIGN
WITH MR. VERGARA SHOULD HIS RECALL PETITION SUCCEED.
AS ONE OF THE PEOPLE OF BAGUIO, I ASK THE PEOPLE OF
BAGUIO TO RESIST CALLS FOR MR. VERGARA TO RETURN TO
OFFICE. THE POSITIVE GAINS OF THE BAGUIO HERITAGE
PETITION'S GOAL FOR A HISTORIC, CLEAN AND SUSTAINABLE
CITY OF PINES MUST NOT GO TO WASTE WITH THE
RE-INSTALLMENT OF A CORRUPT POLITICIAN SUCH AS
VERGARA.
FOR THE SAKE OF A CLEAN GOVERNMENT, FOR THE SAKE OF
BAGUIO'S FUTURE AND PRIDE AS A CITY THAT STRIVES TO
PRESERVE WHAT HERITAGE AND ENVIRONMENT IT HAS LEFT,
PLEASE SPREAD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE, AND LET THE
PLIGHT OF BAGUIO AND ITS PEOPLE REACH THE WORLD.
