Witch Doctored for Hallowe'en

Proclaimed by: Leo Ruickbie
Proclaimed from: Edinburgh, Scotland

Proclamation...

Witch doctored just in time for Hallowe'en.

LP Ruickbie has been awarded a PhD from King's College, London, for his work on witchcraft. Dr Ruickbie has been studying modern witchcraft - what it is, who does it, what effect it has on them and what it means for the rest of us. His conclusions might raise a few eyebrows.

His thesis, called 'The Re-Enchanters: Theorising Re-Enchantment and Testing for its Presence in Modern Witchcraft', grapples with a central paradigm in social theory: that we live in a disenchanted world. It is a world we are familiar with: bureaucratic, disempowering and devoid of meaning, and a world in which there is no such thing as magic. But for one section of society, at least, that is no longer the case.

Dr Ruickbie discovered that magic works, but not in the way we expect. He found that people who called themselves witches were 're-enchanted'. This involved non-rational modes of knowing, the seeking of magical salvation, mystical experience, mythological explanation and personal empowerment. They believed in personal gods and in a living, spiritual world in which everything is interconnected. What this means is that, unlike most of the rest of us, they felt their lives had more meaning and purpose, that they now lived better lives.

For more information Dr Ruickbie can be contacted via his websites: www.witchology.com and www.witchcraftoutoftheshadows.com. King's College, London, general enquiries can be contacted by telephone on +44 (0) 20 7836 5454, or e-mail to ceu@kcl.ac.uk.
