Proclaimed by: M Macha Nightmare - A WitchVox Sponsor
Proclaimed from: San Rafael, California

Priest of Brighid Teaching Pagan Chaplaincy

Hoping to serve the growing needs of Pagans in hospitals, hospice work, prisons and the military, Patrick McCollum, has joined the faculty of the Cherry Hills Pagan Seminary. For nine years, McCollum, who is a Priest of Brighid, previously served as the Statewide Wiccan Chaplain for the California Dept. of Corrections, making California the first state government to recognize Pagan chaplaincy.

“It is my hope to develop a professional Pagan chaplaincy that is both knowledgeable and qualified to operate in the greater national community, ” McCollum stressed. His class “Pagan Chaplaincy” will be offered starting Summer Semester 2005.

As the National Liaison between the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and governmental branches, McCollum specializes in advising legislative and law enforcement officials about matters of religious accommodation for Pagans and other minority faiths. The AAR is the worlds’ largest and oldest organization of religious scholars, theologians and clergy.

He was recently elected to the National Advisory Council of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. “In this context, I work with the Rev. Barry Lynn and others to protect our religious rights under the Constitution, ” McCollum explained. He also serves as the national Coordinator for the Lady Liberty League Prison Ministry program, and is the director of Our Lady of the Wells church. His book "Wiccan Chaplains’ Guide for the California Department of Corrections" will soon be joined by a new book titled "Courting the Lady, A Wiccan Journey: The Sacred Path."

McCollum has been active in the Pagan community since 1965 and is one of the early founders of Wicca and Paganism in the USA. A Priest of Brighid and master goldsmith and jewelry designer, he has made pieces for the Queen of England, the President of the USA, and movie stars. He was also the technical director and appeared in the History Channel’s documentary on “Witches” which is annually aired around Samhain. A guest on numerous radio and TV shows, McCollumn has lectured on Wicca, Paganism, and the Goddess movement at various colleges and universities. He is considered by the courts to be a recognized expert on Wicca and paganism in general.

This press release made available by Cherry Hill Seminary (CHS) , a professional Pagan ministry program, fostering a vibrant flow of information about and for the broad Pagan community. Offering college level courses in pagan studies, CHS bases its philosophy on sacred connections and community building. Cherry Hill’s thought-provoking courses reach for the rapidly growing Pagan community. Paganism is one of the fastest growing religions in the United States, and is popularly available in the many books, films and prime-time televisions shows involving aspects of Paganism. An increase in Pagan practitioners has created a demand for teachers, leaders and professionally trained clergy – and Cherry Hill Seminary is trying to meet this growing demand.
