Eco-psychology at Pagan Seminary

Exploring the relationship between mental health and human interaction with the natural world is a vision of Guilford Prickette, a new faculty member of the Cherry Hills Pagan Seminary. The course “Eco-psychology” will be offered Summer Semester 2005 as part of Pastoral Counseling.

Eco-psychology from a pagan perspective will look at how Western culture has moved away from seeing itself as a part of a larger system and how human biology fits within the biosphere. There will also be experiential opportunities to reflect on how students’ spiritual life and worldview as pagans affects the world around them.

“This class will offer an introduction and exploration of the growing field of eco-psychology and an illustration of the many connections between eco-psychology and earth-centered spirituality, ” Prickette described. “We’ll review concerns about the ways we interact with the Earth and the potential effects both to humans and to the larger ecology, ” he explained.

Providing an infrastructure for the Pagan community to grow is an area Prickette holds dear. “We need to take our vibrant community to the next level, and I believe the Cherry Hill Seminary can be at the forefront of this, ” he said. “I am excited to be a part of this, ” Prickette reflected.

Prickette is excited about Paganism. “I love the community, the openness to explore new ideas, the love of life and pleasure, and the genuine goodwill, ” he enthused. “I am so pleased to be part of a community that loves and honors the earth, and loves and honors the divine within all of us, around us, and connecting us, ” he mused.

Holding dual Masters Degrees in Religious Studies and Counseling Psychology, Prickette works as a mental health clinician for the Alaska Native Healthcare organization. His research into eco-psychology has been presented at workshops for the American Academy of Religion, and the pagan gatherings Starwood and PantheaCon. Prickette, originally an eclectic Pagan, has found that the Druidic path now resonates with him. He is a member of Ár nDraíocht Féin: A Druid Fellowship, Inc., and is in the process of forming a Grove in Alaska. He is a founding member of the Alaska Pagan Community Builders, an interfaith pagan organization dedicated to building and strengthening Alaska's small but growing Pagan community. The 33-year old father of 2 lives in Anchorage with his wife Rebecca.

This press release made available by Cherry Hill Seminary (CHS) , a professional Pagan ministry program, fostering a vibrant flow of information about and for the broad Pagan community. Offering college level courses in pagan studies, CHS bases its philosophy on sacred connections and community building. Cherry Hill’s thought-provoking courses reach for the rapidly growing Pagan community. Paganism is one of the fastest growing religions in the United States, and is popularly available in the many books, films and prime-time televisions shows involving aspects of Paganism. An increase in Pagan practitioners has created a demand for teachers, leaders and professionally trained clergy – and Cherry Hill Seminary is trying to meet this growing demand.
