Heathen Books from Freya's Folk

Proclaimed by: Prudence Priest
Proclaimed from: San Francisco, California

Proclamation...

Current Available Heathen Publications:

ANTIQUITATES CURIOSAE (Curious Antiquities) , reprint of 1819 work by Joseph Taylor, indexed. The etymology of many remarkable old sayings, proverbs, & singualr customs is explored and explained in this quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore. $15.00 each, 5/$42.00.

ON A RUNIC DOOR FROM ICELAND, a facsimile reproduction of a paper written by George Stephens, first published in Archaeologia Scotica in 1873. $3.00 each, 2/$5.00, 10/$20.00.

THE WORLDS ACCORDING TO LOKI, by Thor Bernstein (aka Vampyre Mike Kassel) is a humorous and mythologically correct retelling of Norse Mythology from Loki's point of view. "The Loki book turned out to be quite fun. I am so used to reading second-rate material in Asatru that I did not have high hopes, but it was based solidly in the Eddic sources and entertaining all at the same time. A rare combination." - James Chisholm, former Steersman of the Troth and member of the Rune Gild
$15.00 each, 5/$50.

Recent reviews from Yggdrasil:
I have been very remiss in presenting reviews and keeping up with all the great stuff that is out there. It seems I come across some thing worthy weekly. Here's a brief summary of some of the more interesting items: I have limited quantities of the following Kulgrinda CD's I brought back from my most recent trip. All are sung and chanted in Lithuanian, and accompanied with traditional instruments. The included booklets on all three CD's do have English liner notes as well as translations. They're $20.00 each which includes postage. Make check to: FREYA'S FOLK, PMB 165, 537 Jones Street, SF, CA 94102-2007. The first one is "Songs to Gediminas, " who was the last heathen emperor of Europe, who dreamt of an iron wolf. The second, Perkuno Giesmes, is a compilation of chants and invocations to Perkunas (Thor) . “Hymns to Perkunas" are dedicated to the most prominent god in the Baltic pantheon – the thunderer Perkunas. In these hymns we sing about the Great God, the young Pekunas of spring – Joris, the Oak – the tree of Perkunas, the goat – the favorite animal of Perkunas, the hill – the place of Perkunas' sanctuary. . . These hymns are sung during holidays dedicated to Perkunas and during other Baltic religious events. (liner notes) ” One can even hear the thunder they invoked in the background. The third is simply and elegantly Prussian chants and songs. It opens with howling wolves and it is a delight to listen to even if you don't understand a word of Lithuanian.

Besides these three CD's, I also have some copies of the second printing (all in sepia ink with delightful new chapter illustrations) of Jonas Trinkunas' seminal work on the Baltic faith, OF GODS & HOLIDAYS, complete with bibliography and Glossary. Here's an excerpt from the Glossary: “Ragana – goddess of death and resurrection. Protectress of the cycles of nature, keeper of power of life within limits. All knowing, all foretelling. Simultaneously a beautiful and a horrible woman (the modern Lithuanian word ragana means “witch”) . Incarnations: primarily as a toad, but also as a goat, mare, crow, magpie, hedgehog, pike, carp, and other fish.” $20.00 postpaid from Freya's Folk. CURRENTLY SOLD OUT. New copies not expected till 8/14. Try the Baltic Bookshop.
