OPERATION YULE LOG - Press Release

Welcome - please join with us in making Operation Yule Log a success for our deployed Pagan troops who will be far away from home at Yule.

--------------------------------------
IMPORTANT UPDATE: 12.06.07

Thank you to all who have made Operation Yule Log such a wonderful reality and success in reaching out to our Pagan troops who are so far away from home this Yule.

I am truly touched by the incredible response we've gotten to this project the very first year we've done this. And we intend to make this a tradition that keeps going until all our troops come home.

We have now removed the list of Pagan military groups and addresses for this year. Any Yule Logs that will arrive in time for Yule are now already on their way. We will put up a new Pagan military group mailing list for next Yule about 3 months before Yule next year.

Love and Many Yuletide Blessings to Each and Every One of You!

~Kay

My name is Rev. Kay J. Ahl, (aka: Tia Hu) , and I am helping Pete with this project.

We are inviting anyone who may wish to do so, to send Yule Logs, or Yule Log supplies, to our Pagan military troops deployed to the Desert Moon Grove groups in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Korea.

There are now 16 Desert Moon Pagan U.S. Military groups deployed to these combat zones and hot spots around the world. The Desert Moon Network and Desert Moon Grove Pagan Military Groups are founded by Sgt Eric Cooper.
Home group: Desert Moon Grove
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Desert_Moon_Grove/

See the list of Pagan military groups, contacts, and mailing addresses below this message.

Please send packages to the troops in Afghanistan by November 30th, and everywhere else by December 4st. Thank you.

Troops receiving these Yule Logs are also being encouraged to share any 'extra' Yule Logs as a gesture of good will from our Pagan troops and supporters to other U.S. troops, British and other Coalition troops, and to the various offices on their respective foreward bases. So there isn't any need to limit the number of Yule Logs sent to only 16, and all that are sent will be distributed and appreciated by other troops.

Yule Logs are a remnant tradition from the Bon Fires of ancient Europe. Traditionally the Yule Log is often cut from the Yule Tree after the celebration period is ended, then saved to burn as the Yule Log during the observance of Yule the following year.

Here are the supplies list and mailing options for the Yule Logs:

For Operation Yule Log: You may cut the Yule Logs yourselves from a straight section of wood. The most traditional types of wood are Oak, Birch, Ash, Holly, Rowan, Pine, or Willow. But any type of wood can be used, as long as it is safe to burn.

On the top of these Yule Logs please drill or carve out 3 holes to accommodate 3 standard sized taper candles. On the bottom please shave off some wood from an area that would help the log to have a stable base and keep from rolling. Or you can nail or glue a couple of small pieces of branch to form this stable base.

Here are sample pictures of already made Yule Logs at Birch Craft, Inc: http://www.birchcraftinc.com/yule_logs.asp

Here is a Pagan page on how to make Yule Logs, with more suggestions and symbology: http://crystalforest3.homestead.com/craftsYULELOG.html

If you wish to mail a Yule Log that you've have cut, and wish to send it in a USPS Flat rate box; the box that would work the best is the 11" X 8.5" X 5.5" rectangular size. For this Flat Rate box, the dimensions of the Yule Log should be no larger than 10.5 inches long, and 5.0 inches in diameter. Each of these Flat Rate boxes costs $8.95 to mail.

If you want, you may send slightly larger Yule Logs you cut yourself; but please no larger than 16 inches long, and 8 inches in diameter, as our troops are limited for storage space. And for these there would not be any USPS Flat Rate box available; which means you would have to pay more postage to send it.

With the Yule Logs, please include the following supplies:

3 standard size taper candles - one red, one white or silver, and one green.
The candles may be scented or unscented
Please wrap the candles individually to prevent any possible melting of wax on to other supplies, especially for those sent to Iraq. It can be hot there even in Winter.

A small package of wooden matches

Optional supplies: - real or artificial
Holly Sprigs with leaves and berries
Small Pine Cones
Mistletoe Sprigs
Protective Herbs

If you wish, you may also carve protective, strengthening, and victorious symbols for our Pagan troops on the Yule Logs. Or write these symbols on stones or other materials, such as red, green, or white/silver ribbons, to send with the Yule Logs.

Another option, would be to buy Yule Logs that are already made through various companies that make them available. Most of these are usually about 12 inches to 16 inches long, and again would require higher postage to send than the those which would fit the smaller USPS Flat Rate box.

For more information about Flat Rate boxes and envelopes through USPS go here:
http://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/123.htm#wp1071591
You can order the Flat Rate boxes online, or request them at your local post office.
There isn't any charge for these boxes, and you may request 1 to 20 in one order.

To get the U.S. Postal Service Military Care Kit, or “Mili-kit”, containing three flat rate boxes, two cube boxes, nine address labels, and 16 customs forms. This kit may be ordered by calling the USPS Expedited Package Supply Center at 1-800-610-8734.
There is no charge for the kit. Sometimes there is a back order on these kits though, which may result in a wait. So you can also check with your local post office to see if they have any in stock.

(A special thank you to Laura Roberts of Pagans United for helping me find all the needed USPS information on Flat rate boxes, etc) . http://www.pagansunited.com/

If you have any questions or comments; please feel free to contact us at: operation_yulelog@yahoo.com

It is our hope that Operation Yule Log will become a yearly tradition for our deployed Pagan Troops.

Thank you to all who choose to send Yule Logs to our Pagan Troops in combat zones and hot spots around the world.

Many Blessings and a Very Happy Yule!
