On Friday, October 4, 2013, 5:30-7:00pm the Connecticut Historical Society, One Elizabeth Street, Hartford, Connecticut 06105. will host a panel discussion titled, "Should Connecticut Apologize for Hanging Witches." Panel members are Walter Woodward, State Historian of Connecticut, Lisa Johnson, Executive Director of the Stanley-Whitman House and Richard G. Tomlinson, author of, "Witchcraft Prosecution: Chasing the Devil in Connecticut. For more information, please call (860) 236-5621 extension 289.
Local Pagans, Witches, Heathens, Wiccans and descendants should attend this important event. Please wear a discreet emblem of your faith.
In 2008 and 2009, bills were introduced in the Connecticut State Legislature to express regret at the Witchcraft executions that occured in Colonial Connecticut and to affirm that no disgrace should attach to the descendants of the accused. These bills died in committee, but the issue has not gone away. Appeals have continued with petitions to the Governor to take some action. What should the Governor do? Does the State of Connecticut owe an apology to the descendants of those who were hanged?
Update: September 23, 2013. There should be ample free parking at the Connecticut Historical Society lot. They will be taking some questions from the audience.
Update: October 5, 2013. Small turnout for this event. Twenty people not including staff. State Historian Walter Woodward and author Richard Tomlinson remained opposed to the apology. Lisa Johnson Executive Director of the Stanley-Whitman House spoke very much in favor of an apology. Both Woodward and Tomlinson stated that they had a problem with the word, apology, but that they would be in favor of the State saying that they regretted hanging Witches. Many other good suggestions came from the audience and from the panelist. Thanks was given to the Connecticut State Historical Society for hosting this event and for keeping this issue in the public eye. Thank you to all the attendees who offered new ideas to continue this fight. Thank you to the Witches Voice for the opportunity to get this message out to so many of the Pagan/Witch community. Blessed Be.
