Imbolc Action Benefits Women’s Shelter

Proclaimed by: Rev Jorinx
Proclaimed from: Sioux City, Iowa

Proclamation... SIOUX CITY, IA --- Earlier this week, Reverends Betsy Singh-Anand and JoEllen McCord delivered donations of items to the Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. The two are ordained clergy of Siouxland First Wiccan Congregation, a nonprofit corporation in Northwestern Iowa. The donations were raised at last week’s Imbolc ceremony.
Revs. Singh-Anand and McCord delivered items needed by the Council’s women’s shelter.
“Often the women who arrive at the shelter leave their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs, ” Rev. Singh-Anand explained. “We donated things like shampoo, toothbrushes, and so forth -- things we take for granted.”
Siouxland First Wiccan Congregation, which helps support about a dozen local charities and interfaith organizations in the Siouxland area, collects donations for one specific organization each high holiday, or Sabbat.
In addition, the Wiccan church, which established its presence three years ago, auctioned off a ceremonial broom, raising $70 for the women’s shelter.
The Imbolc celebration was attended by about 15-20 people. Imbolc, which is generally celebrated around Groundhog Day, marks the first stirring of the new light for Wiccans. Also called Candlemass or St. Brigid’s Mass, it celebrates the hope for Spring’s arrival.
Wicca is an Earth-based religion which honors the cycles of nature and the duality of the universe. It draws from many sources, including the pre-Christian faiths of Europe, Hermeticism, and early Christian Gnostic teachings. In the United States, it is estimated that between 500, 000 and 1 million people are Wiccans.
