Wiccan Church in Iowa Gets Nod From Feds

Proclaimed by: Rev Jorinx
Proclaimed from: Portland, Iowa

Proclamation... February 24, 2005
SIOUX CITY, IA --- Members of one Wiccan church in the Siouxland area now can deduct their contributions from their federal income tax. Located in Sioux City, Siouxland First Wiccan Congregation today received notice from the Internal Revenue Service that the three year-old church is now “exempt from Federal income tax under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.”
What began as a series of “Wicca for Beginners” classes evolved into an Iowa nonprofit corporations, Siouxland First Wiccan Congregation, about two years ago. Shortly after incorporating, SFWC began to apply for federal tax exempt status.
“It all began because we needed a bank account, ” Rev. Jeva Singh-Anand, one of the founders explained.
Board President Rev. Marie Yeska was elated over the news.
“I certainly am happy, ” she said. “It was a lot of hard work.”
The small, but active, Wiccan congregation meets at First Unitarian Church of Sioux City. In addition to offering classes educating the community about their often misunderstood religion, SFWC observes full moons and the Sabbats, or high holidays. The church is also involved in community action and charity work, helping to support and cooperating with over a dozen local organizations.
“These organizations range from the Humane Society to Interfaith resources, ” Rev. Betsy Singh-Anand, Board treasurer, explained.
Perhaps it is no coincidence that, although dated February 17, the letter arrived on the 23, the day of the full moon. Symbolic of the Triple Goddess of Wicca, the full moon represents Her fertility aspect. Hence, the full moon is of especial significance to Wiccans.
Wicca is an earth-based religion, based on the pre-Christian faiths of Europe and a number of other influences, such as Hermeticism, Gnostic teachings, and Eastern religions.
