Wiccans at Siouxland Human Rights Event

Proclaimed by: Rev Jorinx
Proclaimed from: Sioux City, Iowa

Proclamation... Monday, May 16, 2006
SIOUX CITY, IA --- When Sioux City's director of the Human Rights Commission, Karen Mackey, invited Siouxland First Wiccan Congregation to rent a booth at its annual Multicultural Fair, the tiny but active congregation wasted no time preparing for the event.
Four SFWC representatives yesterday staffed a booth for five hours, handing out informational materials and showing a self-produced documentary film, titled The Wiccan Experience: Priests, Magicians, Citizens. In addition, photo displays of SFWC ceremonies and charity actions, as well displays about Wiccan beliefs and practices, provided the estimated 1500 visitors to the Sioux City Convention Center with rare and candid insights into the Wiccan faith and the practices of SFWC.
Fritz Jung of the Wiccan website www.witchvox.com gave the congregation permission to use music he composed and recorded for the film's soundtrack.
Siouxland First Wiccan Congregation actively supports thirteen local charities and interfaith organizations.
“We don't have anything to hide, ” Rev. Jeva Singh-Anand, co-founder and board secretary explained. “Nothing we do is illegal or immoral. We relish the high degree of acceptance and respect we have received in Siouxland.”
A federally recognized church, SFWC decided long ago that its relationship with the community was a matter or dignity and of survival. And the best approach of handling the matter, church leaders understood, was a proactive one. It is an approach that has worked for over three years in this Iowa meatpacking town, which straddles the borders of Nebraska and South Dakota.
SFWC representatives were elated by the positive community response.
“It was just wonderful, ” Rev. Jacki Saeemodarae, board vice president, said.
Mackey, who is not a Wiccan, also expressed satisfaction. The event was run on a shoestring budget, she explained, adding that the visitors to the Multicultural Fair were a representative cross section of the Sioux City community.
“I'm pleasantly surprised, ” she said, smiling. “This will definitely continue to be an annual event. We will find the money, somehow.”
