SFWC Raises $1200 for Hurricane Relief

SIOUX CITY, IA --- Friends and members of Siouxland First Wiccan Congregation spent their Labor Day Weekend raising donations for hurricane relief efforts in New Orleans, LA. For two days, they collected donations totaling $1200 from patrons at three local businesses. The monies will be delivered to the Siouxland Chapter of Red Cross Tuesday.
Members of the small Wiccan church, a federally recognized 501 (c) (3) charity, took donations at Bomgaars, K-Mart, and the Floyd Boulevard Wal-Mart. Kinko's donated 24 signs which said “Hurricane Relief, Please Donate. All Proceeds to American Red Cross.” And Sioux City resident Shirley Themm helped make the collection jars.
The church's friends and members expressed gratitude toward the businesses and the Siouxland community in general.
“I was amazed at the response and generosity of the people, ” the Rev. Marie Yeska, SFWC's board president said. She added that many donors praised the church for helping in the fundraising efforts.
SFWC's Vice President, the Rev. Jacki Saeemodarae, said she was touched by the kindness and unity in which the Siouxland community acted.
“Several people said, 'I've given every place I've went.' -- and then they gave some more, ” she said. “One (Latino) spoke to her daughter in Spanish, 'Tell them in English that you give from the heart.' Then the little girl put her hand on her heart.”
The Rev. Saeemodarae is planning to do volunteer work in New Orleans upon completion of her Red Cross volunteer course.
Sioux City resident Bobi Martinez provided the logistics work for the two-day fundraiser.
Near tears, she said, “This has restored my faith in the American people.”
Wicca is an Earth-focused religion based in the indigenous faiths of Europe.
