In the United States, cancer is the #1 disease-related cause of death of children infant to 19; more than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and pediatric AIDS combined.
Childhood cancer is not a single disease, but rather many different types that fall into 12 major categories.

Each year in the U.S., approximately 12, 500 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer; 20% of them will not survive.
Childhood cancer occurs regularly, randomly and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class, or geographic region.
For every six research dollars per patient with AIDS, and every one research dollar per patient with breast cancer; a child with cancer receives just 30 cents.
One in every 330 Americans will develop cancer by the age of 20.
The cause of most childhood cancers are unknown and at present, cannot be prevented. Most adult cancers result from lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet, occupation and other exposure to cancer-causing agents.
Young patients often have a more advanced stage of cancer when first diagnosed. Approximately 20% of adults with cancer show evidence the disease has spread; yet at the time of diagnosis almost 80% of children show that the cancer has spread to distant sites.
Research has led to new and better treatments for pediatric cancer. Today, nearly 80% of children diagnosed with cancer become long-term survivors; 50 years ago it was less than 10%.
Breakthroughs in pediatric cancer not only help children but discoveries also progress the diagnosis and treatment of adult cancers.
Few things are more devastating than hearing the news that your child has been diagnosed with cancer. Children and their families are thrust into a frightening situation for which they are totally unprepared.
