Free Spirit Alliance ("FSA") , one of the country's largest and oldest Pagan organizations, is once again at the forefront of the Pagan community as it launches its Community Scholarship Program.
FSA has long recognized the importance of education and knowledge in transforming the world into a place where fear and mistrust no longer drive people's reactions to non-mainstream ideas and lifestyles. FSA also honors the role of children and young adults in our community, and for years have provided a child-friendly festival environment at Free Spirit Gathering ("FSG") .
Now, in cooperation with the Circle of Amber Rose and the Pagan Community of Binghamton, NY, FSA has taken these commitments one step further by organizing a scholarship program designed to support our youth and promote the values of Pagan and other community- and earth-centered spiritualities.
Scholarship applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the values that make our community strong -- honesty, trust, tolerance, community service and a strong sense of personal ethics and values -- and that they have the motivation and aptitude for leadership. Applicants need not identify as Pagan themselves, nor do they need to be students at a "traditional" university. Students pursuing study in "non-traditional" programs such as therapeutic massage or holistic healing are just as welcome to apply as those planning to attain a bachelor's or associate's degree.
To fund the two $500 scholarships that will be awarded each year, FSA has been accepting donations, running silent auctions and sponsoring the "Ink the Elf" tattoo contest. The latter, the brainchild of FSA's president and FSG Registrar (also known as the "Registration Elf") , George Marvil, involves Marvil's very physical contribution to the scholarship's launch. He has volunteered to let the Pagan community -- though scholarship-funding votes, at $10 each -- choose the design that he will have tattooed on his arm at this year's Free Spirit Gathering. Marvil has been encouraging people to "vote early and often, " and looks forward to what will undoubtedly be one of the world's most public tattoo experiences -- and all for a good cause.
When asked why he chose such an unorthodox fundraising plan Marvil replied “I wanted to do something other than just ask for a donation. The contest allows people to pick their favorite design and then see if it wins. And the public tattooing at FSG will be fun for those who can attend. Plus, I want to be able to expand the program next year. If the community shows their support through votes and scholarship applications, then we can expand the program in the future.”
Applications for this year's scholarships (for use during the 2004-05 academic year) are due no later than May 1, 2004. "Ink the Elf" votes must be cast no later than June 1st; the winning design will be announced at FSG. For more information about the scholarship go to the FSG website: http://www.freespiritgathering.org/scholarship/index.html or email Glen Marshall at Treasurer@FreeSpiritGathering.org.
