Reviewing & Commenting on Proposed VA Procedures for Approving Headstone Symbols
(This is from the Circle Sanctuary website, on the Lady Liberty League & Veteran Pentacle pages. It's much more concise & accurate than my last post. -- A.C.)
The US Department of Veterans Affairs has proposed a new set of procedures for emblems of belief approval for use on VA-issued memorial headstones, markers, and plaques honoring deceased veterans.
DEADLINE for submitting comments: March 20, 2007
We have a variety of concerns about these proposed procedures, including:
There is still no requirement that the VA make any decision on an emblem of belief application.
There are no time limits for decision making on applications.
These proposed procedures contain vague wording that seems to permit the VA to continue to pick and choose which religions to accommodate and which symbols to approve.
Essentially, if these new procedures are adopted and go into effect, the Pentacle could still be kept in limbo with no decision being made at all, and it possibly could even be rejected should a VA official deem our symbol not appropriate for state and federal veteran cemeteries.
Symbols for other religions, including other forms of Paganism, may also be kept in limbo or be rejected.
HOW TO REVIEW & MAKE COMMENTS:
Although we cannot directly link to the comments page on the proposed revised procedures, we have included directions below on how to view the regulations and submit a comment.
To find the text of the regulations & submit comments, do the following:
Go to this website:
Use the "Keyword or ID" search box, and type in the document's ID:
Once you are looking at the document details, find the little yellow conversation bubble, and click on it to submit comments.
The text of the emblems of belief rules was published in the Federal Register (72 Fed. Reg. 2480) on January 19, 2007. There is a sixty day public comment period, with final comments due on March 20, 2007.
If you wish to comment, please keep your remarks polite and professional. You do not need to disclose your religious orientation in contributing comments. If you are a veteran or on active duty, it would be helpful for you to state that you have had military service and when you served.
We would appreciate a copy of any feedback you send about these proposed rules.
Send us copies of your comments:
