American Health Security Act

Proclaimed by: Isis Rose
Proclaimed from: St. Louis area, Missouri

Proclamation...

I am taking this opportunity to ask for your support for House Bill HR1200 and Senate Bill S 915 (American Health Security Act) .

In my 20+ years of experience as a Payroll Specialist, I have seen numerous instances in which employees did not carry the health insurance provided by the employer because they could not afford it. In addition, an increasing number of employer provided insurance plans now do not cover treatments for catastrophic diseases (e.g. cancer) and have high copays that leave many with tremendous debt in the aftermath of a stay in the hospital. So, this is not only an issue for the unemployed.

45, 000 Americans a year die because they delay seeking health care they cannot afford.

“For more than 100 years, there have been those who have fought for universal health care coverage based on a social insurance model, an approach that has proven to be cost-effective and efficient in countries across the globe and in this country to provide health security for seniors.”-- http://blog.aflcio.org/2011/05/10/afl-cio-nnu-back-new-universal-health-care-bill/

“Consumers spent $363 billion, or 14.7 percent, more for health care goods and services in 2009 than is captured in official government accounts. These out-of-pocket (OOP) medical costs include products and services not covered by insurance programs, purchases that are outside of conventional therapies and treatments, and care for others, which accounts for $199 billion of the total.” -- http://www.deloitte.com/us/consumerhealthspending

“Health insurance is primarily provided by the private sector, with the exception of programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, the Children's Health Insurance Program, and the Veterans Health Administration.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported that a record 50.7 million residents (which includes 9.9 million non-citizens) or 16.7% of the population were uninsured in 2009.” -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care_in_the_United_States

“Thirty-two of the thirty-three developed nations have universal health care, with the United States being the lone exception.” --
