For over 4 years, I've been attempting to bring the area Pagan community together in Montana--for together we have power--and so many Pagans hide in their closets or avoid contact with groups that no one can even guess how many of us there are (and they'd be surprised how many of us there are) .
Mountain Moon Circle had rented Westminster Shire camp for our annual event, (see Events listed for Montana on Witchvox) February, and our deposit check was cashed then. But on June 24th, I received a letter from 'The Camping and Youth Committee' refunding our deposit and
stating:
"It has come to our attention that the nature of your group and activiites you plan to offer are not in accordance with our camp policy and our understanding of the Christian Scriptures, which form the basis of our policy. Accordingly, our Camp Committee has decided to return your deposit and deny your request for the use of the camp...
Time for a visit to a lawyer! AND to make an attempt to get some names of this 'committee' so I could try to communicate with them. This camp is in National Forest. The Feds say one cannot discriminate against religion.
I sent letters, but heard nothing from the committee members I tried to contact. Finally on Jul 11th, the National Forest people met with the committee and explained to them that their lease contains a non-discrimination clause, which is also posted on property. They knew I was ready to take this to Federal court if necessary--but the committe relented. The camp is ours. They asked that we 'respect the
building they use as a chapel' (slam) .
I then received a boquet of flowers from them. The card read "Although we may disagree, nothing personal. Sorry for any anxiety our decisions caused you. Welcome to the camp!" (as if that would attone for the stress we've been under the last couple of weeks!
IF WE COME TOGETHER AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER WE HAVE LESS CHANCE OF LOSING THE HARD-WON POLITICAL RIGHTS WE HAVE!
