CUUPSLV Has A New Name
In December of 2001, a Pagan member of UUCLV (The Unitarian
Universalist Congregation of Las Vegas, ) had an idea - start a
CUUPS chapter. (Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans.)
By February of 2002, we were up and running. By Samhain of 2002, we
were offering our first public ritual together as a group. We decided
to make eclectic, non-sectarian Pagan spirituality available to anyone
who seeks it. The only criteria for participating is mutual respect,
personal responsibility, and a willingness to strive for right relations.
When the chapter formed, we called ourselves, "CUUPSLV, " for obvious
reasons. In these past three years, we have begun to realize that the
name is too generic to adequately describe this group and express
"who we are."
On Saturday, July 2, 2005, the core members of CUUPSLV, (that is,
those members who are both members of UUCLV and the nationwide CUUPS
organization, ) got together at the guest house of the Temple of
Goddess Spirituality to work on our bylaws. (Thank you, Anne Key, for
your gracious hospitality.)
One of the first things we addressed was our name. We brainstormed,
and together came up with Agave Spirit Grove.
It was became important to us that the name referred to this region
and the natural environment here. The agave plant is an indigineous
plant that the desert dwelling people here relied upon as a staple for
nourishment - for food, drink, and clothing.
The agave is a hardy, tenacious, survivor plant. The nectar of
certain species of the agave plant is sweet, and it's juice can be
used in spellwork. Certain varieites are used for healing, and
certain others are used to make tequila.
We hope as a group to emulate some of the same properties of the agave
- healing, diverse varieties, tenacity, nourishment, and sweetness.
For the next year, we'll continue to also be known by CUUPSLV, until
everything is changed over. Nothing else will change - we'll continue
to strive to support the Pagan community.
We are excited about this milestone and hope you will continue to
participate and provide the wonderful community support for which we
are so grateful.
