Thanking our Pagan Elders

Proclaimed by: Isaac Bonewits - A WitchVox Sponsor
Proclaimed from: Valley Cottage, New York

Proclamation... With the Feast of the Turkey God kicking off the winter holiday season, it’s a good time to give thanks to those who have taught so many of us so very much. In keeping with that idea, I have a Pagan Action suggestion for borrowing a custom from a mainstream religion. Every year the Roman Catholic Church does a special collection of donations called “Peter’s Pence” (a pence being more-or-less a penny) . The idea is to collect a multitude of small donations specifically for the care and upkeep of the pope. I’ve been accused of trying to be a “Pagan pope” on more than one occasion, so it’s occurred to me that it might be a nice idea to start a new Pagan custom, call it “Isaac’s Iota” say (an iota being something very small, like the Greek letter of that name) , to be observed in November and December from Turkey Day (in the USA) through Yule.
This ties in with what I’ve written in the past about the need to support Pagan elders and seniors (see "Adopt an Elder, " elsewhere on WitchVox) . With the American economy being in the pits for all but the wealthiest of us, you can be sure that your favorite authors, clergy, and group leaders, especially if over 50, will be experiencing harder times than most folks in the Neopagan movement.
As an author and full-time Pagan clergy person for nearly forty years, I've had the joy and honor to meet many Pagan Elders of previous generations. I have discovered that all of them, no matter how many books they may have published or how famous they might be in the Pagan microcosm, usually live on the edge of financial disaster. I won't embarrass any of them by name, but think of the ones who began working in the 1950s and 1960s who have mostly grey or white hair (sometimes under colors) now.
Each of us can have one less pizza or one less beer, or buy one less DVD or sci-fi novel. Instead we can give what we would have spent on personal indulgence to a Pagan Elder or senior. We can do this directly through links on some of their websites or by mailing checks or gift cards to their PO boxes. Or we can do it indirectly by buying one of their books or craft objects, but be aware that authors receive only a tiny percentage of the money generated by book sales, and that only after many months or even years.
However you choose to do it, this holiday season, and every year at this time, please give to *some* Pagan Elder (s) somewhere and help keep them able to help all of us.
