FCC is Opening Doors for Local Nonprofits
On Aug. 10, 2007, Democracy Now broke this story.
Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzales Reported that the FCC would have a one week window in October, when local nonprofit organizations could apply for a full power FM radio station license. Radio for People's Libby Reinish said in the interview, "It's definitely not prohibitively expensive to apply for these licenses. If you were to buy a noncommercial radio station in most places in the country, it would cost you millions of dollars. The FCC is handing out these licenses for free." She goes on to tell that one must hire a lawyer and an engineer to fill out the paperwork, and then build the station...which might run from $20, 000 to $200, 00 depending on the size of the station you build. So then, if you know a great nonprofit who could benefit from raising a radio station, let them know early, because it takes a while to get everything together, and the window for application is short. for more information, check the link below
