Proclamation...

Calling all political Pagans in Portland - a call to action?

Contact: J
WitchPAC@yahoo.com

I'm posting this to "take the temperature" of Portland's Pagan community and find out if there's community interest in starting a "Pagan values"-oriented political action committee.

What I have in mind: forming a Portland-local network of interested persons to collectively weigh in on local political issues (City of Portland, Multnomah County, and some State) . As I envision it, this could be done through email campaigns, as well as a direct action group for protests or testifying when necessary. This would give members options as to how involved they get.

What I mean by "Pagan values": I'm sure this term conjures any number of possibilities. My intention would be to keep the agenda lean and focus on things like sustainability, education, affordable housing, and support for small business. But I think the agenda should be hammered out over a democratic process, and would be convened by the Committee.

Why a political action committee? Even though majority politics are pretty well aligned in Portland (sure - everyone wants sustainability, education, etc) , there are still some places I think Pagans could and should make their voices collectively heard. For example: more support for education, or taking a position on the proposal to bring Major League Soccer to Portland using taxpayer money, or pressuring the County for a no-kill animal shelter (these are just examples) . I think the collective voices of Pagans and Heathens of all stripes, if we jump into the mix, are potentially powerful.

As I envision this - there would be no membership dues or any of that crap. At the lowest level of involvement, members would email elected officials on policy issues of interest to the group.

But - I don't know if there is a real interest for this in Portland. If you are interested, please email me at: WitchPAC@yahoo.com. If enough interest emerges, the next step is to meet and discuss.

What do we call this endeavor? I propose WitchPAC (PAC = Political Action Committee) .

Who am I? A kindred soul with five years of working for elected officials under my belt. I'm well versed at getting their attention and would love to put it to work for this community.

Shall we see where this goes?
