Report: 1 dead, 5 critical in Tenn. church shooting

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- A suspected gunman has opened fire during a church service in Knoxville, Tennessee, and one local television station is reporting that one person is dead and five were left in critical condition.
Several media outlets in Knoxville report Sunday that police say the suspected gunman is in custody. WBIR-TV reports that three congregants tackled the suspect, ending his attack.

The television stations report that the shooting took place during a service at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church. Knoxville City Councilman Joe Hultquist told WBIR-TV that one victim has died, and five others are in critical condition.
A spokeswoman for the University of Tennessee Medical Center says the patients are "in various stages of treatment." Spokeswoman Becky Thompson would not release their conditions.
Telephone calls to the Knoxville Police Department were not immediately returned.
