We have just concluded a series of national religious conferences here in Alexandria, VA (Washington DC area) during which the Sacred Well Congregation has gained significant inroads into the interfaith communities that provide for religious ministries in specialized settings.
The Sacred Well Congregation was elected into full membership in the Congress on Ministry in Specialized Settings (COMISS) Network as a Religious Endorsing Body. The Sacred Well Congregation is the first religious organization of our faith group (or related faith groups) to be elected into the COMISS Network. The COMISS Network is essentially the civilian counterpart to the National Council on Ministry to the Armed Forces (NCMAF) and the Endorsers Conference for Veteran’s Administration Chaplaincies (ECVAC) . The Sacred Well Congregation is not (yet) a Religious Endorsing Body (REB) for either the DoD or VA, therefore we are not yet a member of either of the latter two organizations. I was, however, invited by the leadership of those organizations to remain and network with them. This afforded me the opportunity to establish liaison and friendships both with folks I have communicated with over the years and new contacts as well. These contacts included many of the current and former leadership of the military chaplaincies, and the senior recruiters of military chaplains for all of the services. While telephone and email are an effective means of communication, they are not effective in establishing the kind of necessary relationships that only face-to-face meetings can provide. This was a week well spent and will continue to provide tangible and intangible benefits for the Sacred Well for years to come.
I would just like to add a personal note in closing. The openness and acceptance from all three of these organizations that I experienced while here was nothing short of incredible, even from some of the more fundamentalist and conservative representatives in attendance. Despite my continuing concerns regarding the current political/religious climate in this country, I remain hopeful. These conferences were attended by numerous disparate faith groups; yet, to a person, the representatives and attendees were firmly committed to the principles of religious pluralism, and to the right of each individual to pursue his or her own spiritual path and expression of faith and practice.
Finally, I would like to thank our Officers and Friends of the Congregation in the mid-Atlantic area for their support and hospitality. That made this a very pleasant and productive trip indeed.
