Books-A-Million

Proclamation...

Below is a copy of an e-mail that I just sent to the Corporate offices of Books-A-Million detailing an untenable situation at our local store. I don't know if this is how all of the other stores are aranged but, if it is, then the situation is just that much worse.

Please take the time to read the text of the e-mail. You may notice that it makes no referance to Pagan books. This is because Books-A-Million does not carry books on Pagan theology on a regular basis, preferring instead to carry those books of little substance which sell faster (i.e. spell books, kits, etc) . That said, the issue described in the e-mail should be important to us if for no other reason than this: If they can't correctly handle books from religions which collectively make up half of the worlds population and have been around for most of recorded history...how can we expect them to handle our books correctly?

(BEGIN TEXT OF E-MAIL)

To Whom It May Concern:

I was recently in the Longview, Tx BAM store when I noticed something troubling in the way your books are shelved. I entered the store looking for a book on Hindu practices so I went to the "Religion" section. After a few moments of scanning nothing jumped out at me so I asked a rep for help and was directed to the "Philosophy" section. After finding my book I went back to the religion section to take a closer look and was shocked by what I found. Please allow me to describe what I saw and why I am deeply offended by it:

The "Religion" section occupies a single shelf section in the isle. Every book in this section is on Catholicism. Thats it. Nothing on any of the Eastern faiths (Hindu, Buddhism, Shinto, Confucianism) . Nothing on the non-Christian Western Faiths (Judaism, Islam, Zorastarianism) . Nothing on any sect of Christianity other than Catholicism (Unitarian Universalism, Gnosticism) .

Next to this section was the "History and Theology" section which contained books on Islam and Judaism. On the other side of the isle was the first of three shelves which comprised the "Christianity" section, complete with subdivision for "Teens", "Self-Help" and "Bibles" among others.

So here is my problem:

1) It seems to me that your store does not consider any faith other than Judaism, Christianity and Islam to be religions, otherwise the books on Buddhism, Hinduism and the other Easter religions would be in the religion section as opposed to philosophy.

2) It seems to me that your store does not consider Catholicism to be a part of Christianity, otherwise the books on Catholicism would be a) integrated with the section of Christianity or b) constitute a subset of the section of Christianity as opposed to the current set up where all of the Catholic books are lumped together, but not under the headings of Christianity or Catholicism.

When I brought my concerns to the attention of store employee's I was told that the store had no control over where these books were shelved, rather that the shelving directions were dictated by the corporate offices and that it was to there that I should direct my concerns. Now having done so I expect this situation to be looked into and, given Books-A-Millions reputation as a professional and reputable business I feel confidant that it will be remedied.

Thank You.
