Greetings, this email is bringing another focus to your attention. Besides getting supplies out to Pagan Military, Forest Moon also focuses its attention on community, specifically our homeless. Homeless Veterans......just the thought brings a tear, not only are these folks warriors that have protected freedom but now they are thrown out on the streets fighting for shelter and a meal. Here in Skagit County where Forest Moon is based out of in WA State we have nothing for the homeless, one shelter which is open only 9-5 to get in if they have a bed, the other only opens if the temperature reaches 25 degrees. Many stay in tents and go to a soup kitchen when its open. My focus isn't just the Vets but all homeless although being a Vet they are the closest to me. Some statistics...
23% of the homeless population are veterans
33% of the male homeless population are veterans
47% served Vietnam-era
17% served post-Vietnam
15% served pre-Vietnam
67% served three or more years
33% were stationed in war zone
25% have used VA homeless services
85% completed high school/GED, compared to 56% of non-veterans
89% received an honorable discharge
79% reside in central cities
16% reside in suburban areas
5% reside in rural areas
76% experience alcohol, drug or mental health problems
46% are white males, compared to 34% of non-veterans
46% are age 45 or older, compared to 20% non-veterans
We have opened a homeless closet taking in donations of coats, blankets, winter clothes, pots and pans, kitchen utensils, and small appliances, also looking at kids clothes and small toys or stuffed animals. We will issue these items free of charge why I must say that is sad but you see so many Good Will's etc that take your donations free then turn around and sell the items. We are looking into grants and any advice and help with that as in the future we plan on an actual homeless emergency shelter not based on the temperature outside but a place you can lay your head no matter the hour you arrive. January 29 will be a homeless Veteran Stand-down day, we aren't sponsoring this event but we will be a part of it offering clothes, blankets, and our paralegal, Kim, will be offering legal services ie wills, poa's etc Starbucks will also be donating us coffee for this event and if we have the right facilities we will have a small soup kitchen offered compliments of our local Norse Pantry and Valhalla Village. My point is this, realizing most of you aren't in WA and the cost of shipping clothes etc is outrageous but remembering our homeless take clothes etc to your local homeless coalition and guarnteed they would appreciate any help for the homeless available. Here in the Skagit Valley we will take all materials for the homeless and distribute it to those in need. With that, have a safe and wonderful Yule and will send out next update after the New Year. FM Coffee is tomorrow at 1200 at the Whidbey coffee in the mall since we had to cancel the Faire, and will see many of you at the Yule Party on the 18th email me and I will give you our address to get here starts at 200 PM We will be sending out baby announcements and Yule cards to those we have addresses for and if you know we don't have your address please email it to me.
