Proclamation...

For Immediate Release

From: Pagans United
Date: October 17, 2004
Subject: Support for Temple of the Oak
Contact: Laura Wandrie (laura@pagansunited.com)

A Wiccan coven in Oregon Township, Michigan was recently the topic of discussion at a town council meeting. Residents urged the town council and Representative John Stahl to "shut down the devil worshippers." Town council members and Representative John Stahl agreed with the residents. Representative John Stahl promised to "help get rid of" the coven. (http://www.mlive.com/news/fljournal/index.ssf?/base/news-1/1097927401126560.xml)

We at Pagans United would like to remind the residents and town council of Oregon Township, Michigan that Wicca is a federally recognized religion and has been since 1985. By seeking to deny the Temple of the Oak it's rightful place within the community, Representative John Stahl, the town council and members of the community have violated coven members First Amendment right to Freedom of Religion. Furthermore, we would like remind Representative John Stahl and town council members that by accepting a government held office, they agreed to work diligently to protect the rights of ALL citizens, including the right to worship as one chooses.

We are outraged at Representative John Stahl's promise to aid those who seek to eliminate the covens right to worship. We would like to remind Representative John Stahl of his duty to education himself on ALL religions, not just those he professes to agree with. We request that Representative John stahl make a public apology to members of the Temple of the Oak, and to the Michigan Pagan community as a whole.

"The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or a Mohammedan nation."
-- Treaty of Tripoli (1797)

"Neither a state nor the Federal Government can, openly or secretly, participate in the affairs of any religious organizations or groups and vice versa. In the words of Jefferson, the clause against establishment of religion by law was intended to erect 'a wall of separation between Church and State." The U.S. Supreme Court, 1947

"Pagans United will work hard over the next year to educate the public on the Pagan religion. Furthermore, we will not vote for those that seek to persecute those of minority religions. We will seek the resignation of those in government who attempt to deny us our civil rights." - Laura Wandrie, president Pagans United

Pagans United encourages the Pagan community to stand beside the Temple of the Oak in their fight for religious freedom by calling, faxing, or writing Representative John Stahl and the Oregon Township, Michigan town council and reminding them of the rights of ALL United States Citizens to worship as they so choose. Letters can be sent to:
