Spell It Voodoo, Hoodoo, or However You Do:
It's Time to Put the Magic Back into New Orleans!
An important note from Dorothy Morrison, Christopher Penczak, and M. R. Sellars:
Can you imagine what it would be like to have your home completely obliterated in a matter of minutes? Have everything you own completely swept away? Or be stranded in water so high that your only chance of survival is to climb to the roof and pray for the rescue that probably won't happen? Or even worse, be on your way to the hospital with a broken ankle, have your vehicle float away, and be forced to turn back on a makeshift raft while fighting off water rats and trying to maneuver around the dead bodies floating by?
Well...neither can we. But that's exactly what's happened to many of our Pagan brothers and sisters in New Orleans.
Fortunately, most of them escaped with their lives. But their personal devastation is horrific… And, their chances of rebuilding, even more so. That's because the magical community there is often overlooked when it comes time for the government to dole out its aid. And why is that? It's because most of the organizations with ties to the relief aid see to their own first: the people who belong to their churches and religious organizations. Please understand that these folks aren't bad people. It's just that money and supplies are short. And by the time they get around to doling out what's left over, the funds and supplies simply aren't there.
For this reason, it's time to step up to the plate, support our own, and do what's right for them. It's time to do the very things we'd want someone to do for our families if we were in their situation. And it's time to do it now.
First of all, please donate blood. It's crucial - and usually severely lacking - when it comes to treating the injured. So, I urge you to get to a Red Cross Blood Donor Center right away. Remember: You can get along just fine without a pint, but someone else may die without it.
Secondly, trucks have already been reserved and arrangements have been made to get the supplies to our Pagan brothers and sisters. The first shipments are scheduled to go out September 21st. (A list of needed donations and shipping info appears a bit further down.)
If you'd rather send a check, please do so. Money is always good, and will go toward necessary items like bottled water and other items too heavy to ship. [Just an aside...Reverend Velvet Rieth told us that the very first check she received to help with this disaster came from one of her prison inmates - a man who only earns *four cents* per hour. The donation he made was a huge thing for him, and all of us should follow suit!] Checks may be made out to Rolland Smith, and mailed to the same address given for physical donations. [You'll see it a little further down.] Should you choose to go this route, please put CPWC Donation in the memo line, and ask for a tax receipt if you'd like one.
Looking for another way to help? Then visit http://www.e-witch.com and take a look at the NOLA Pagan Relief Auction that we've set up. The auction starts on September 11th. All proceeds will go directly to the community and be converted into supplies to feed, clothe and shelter our brothers and sisters there.
The auction itself will include memorabilia from your favorite Pagan leaders - things that have never before been offered for bid, and will never be offered again. Like what, you ask? Things like personal ritual items, tools and divinatory systems. Things like original manuscripts complete with typos and editor's marks. Yes, Dorothy has even been talked into parting with her very first ritual robe, a tarot deck she used for ten years, and an exact duplicate of her personal spellbook. Christopher is offering up some of his personal jewelry and an uncut manuscript. M.R. has already donated his first Tarot deck and an autographed first edition of Harm None.
And, they aren’t done yet!
But that's not all that's being offered at the NOLA Pagan Relief store on E-Witch. This auction will also include donations from your favorite publishers, retailers, festival organizers, and Pagan magazine editors. So surf on over, have a look-see, and for the love of the Gods, BID!! It's the only way to take advantage of what may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get some really valuable Pagan collectibles.
But what if you'd also like to donate an item to the auction? Well, that would be much appreciated, too! Just send a digital photo - if that's not possible, we'll take care of that from our end - the item description, and your name/festival name/store name to Dorothy Morrison at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Then ship your item to:
Willow Tree Press
10772 Indian Head Industrial Boulevard
St. Louis, MO 63132
Please help the New Orleans Pagans by forming a supply drive. Below is a list of desperately needed items:
Pre-packaged, canned, easy-to-use food
Medical supplies [band-aids, gauze, sterile tape, anti-bacterial ointment, Tylenol, etc.]
Feminine hygiene products
Clothing [tee-shirts, pants, jeans, underwear, socks, shoes or flip-flops]
Toiletries [toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc.]
Anything else you can think of
Then, ship them to:
318 Ash Street
Franklin, TN 37064
Now, while we have your ear...
Later - in a few months or so- Reverend Rieth will be coordinating a cleanup/rebuilding effort for the New Orleans Pagan Community. And that means she'll be needing hands, Folks. We - M.R. Sellars, Christopher Penczak, and Dorothy Morrison - are already making plans to get down there and spend some time swinging hammers, pushing brooms, and doing whatever's necessary to put these folks back on their feet. We'd love to have your help, so stay tuned and check the websites below for further details. They will be posted just as soon as they're available, and perhaps, you can make plans to come out, too.
