Wild Huntsman's Profile...
Born in 1961, been a practicing Witch (or for those who insist Wiccan) for more than 25 years now. I believe the two highest qualities any posess are courage and compassion. Courage to be (or at least to become) , compassion for the world around. Balance in all things is the key. Balance isn't synonymous with comfort, or complacency, it's being stable, but not static. Things that bug me, because they show a lack of compassion, is when I hear lots of complaints and snide comments about 'fuzzy-bunny Wicca'. Why? What's wrong with light and happiness? Nothing, unless it's unbalanced. Then it's someone trying to escape from life's problems into a world of saccharine denial. That becomes its own problem. I am also bugged by those who spend all their time being Dark Lord wannabes.True, some exploration and acceptance of the dark side within all of us is necessary for growth, but exploring darkness is not the same as wallowing in it. Then there are tensions between 'Old School' who won't (often can't) explain why any given rule or dictum or ritual action exists, and 'New School' that makes everything up as it goes along. Neither accepts the other, while screaming about not being respected enough. The most vocal on either side are out of balance, hence the tension. One must know why one does something and that means respecting and understanding existing forms. Balance is necessary for compassion. Those from all paths who do have balance, have compassion and accept each others offerings, but too many are too quiet, too polite. Growth comes from accepting offerings and advice, learning what works and most importantly why it works by discovering underlying principles. There are different ways to teach, different learning styles and what works for one will not necessarily work for another, but as one gains personal balance, things come together. I don't think the neopagan world has lost its focus, it's just become 'cool' which is a terrible thing. Instant spellbooks are a waste of money, just as 'new age' guides to instant enlightenment. There is no easy path, no quick route, memorizing a hundred potions, everything about crystals, or colour magic, or a thousand rituals will not get anyone one step closer to real power, unless one makes the continuous effort to learn about oneself first. There are, and always have been, far too many who are more in need of therapy than magical training to fix their problems. Magic doesn't work without responsibility and responsibility isn't possible without self-discovery. Know Thyself is the first rule, for without that, no one can know anything. It means continuously discovering all the ways how I am still not yet taking full responsibility for everything. It's a lifelong quest. It means enjoying the good and taking the bad (even if there sometimes seems to be more bad than good) . Balance between the light and the shadow, old knowledge and new wisdom, is the key to growth and understanding.
