Michelle's Profile...
When I was a kid I had two ambitions: one was to be in a band, and the other was to run an animal sanctuary.
My other main interests were nature and the occult, and from since I can remember I was staring into ponds for hours to watch frogs and fish, and always looked up curiously into the whispering tree tops.
I've worked on one of my ambitions - and now run Magicfolk, a UK band that grew from a gentle folky trio to its present psych-folk 7-piece which alternates between ethereal Enya-like moods to erratic psychedelic and rocked up Pink Floyd-esque moments.
I've always kept up the esoteric studies, combined with quite a lot of martial art philosophy and training. In my view the more you read and cross-reference, the more informed you become. I've studied in the Dion Fortune Western Mystery Tradition for around 17 years, so I'm heavily influenced by this lady as well. And I also find a lot of value in the Castaneda - Don Juan teachings.
The Magicfolk songs - which I write with my partner Ben - are all inspired by some kind of magic, esotericism or mythology, touching upon a whole range of inspirations from the Egyptian, Greek, Celtic, Hermetic, Shamanic, Wiccan and Pagan traditions, and more. And of course some of them just reflect personal experience in the many strange and mysterious things that can happen.
As for running an animal sanctuary, well, I’ve made a small modest start in my own way - and I take on rescue battery hens when I can. Seeing these wonderful little souls having some quality time out in the open, doing things hens should be doing, like scratching in the soil, having dust baths, digging for worms, flapping their wings and running around, and gradually growing their feathers back, is a real joy.
The Magicfolk song "Little Spirit" is an acknowledgement that there is more to animals than fluff and fur, and that they too, like us, have a spiritual side to their nature.
