Likes: I am inspired by the beauties of the natural world, by the power of art to inspire us, and by the world of ideas that can transform us. Although my prime focus is working with the mysteries of DruidCraft, I don't like to be limited by labels and find many spiritual paths and ideas inspiring and worthy of study and respect.
Dislikes: Dogmatism, fundamentalism, extremism. I love the Jain doctrine of 'Many-sidedness' which encourages us to consider all points of view.
Philip Carr-Gomm's Profile...
I met the old Chief Druid, Ross Nichols, in London when I was young and began studying with him. When I was 18 I was initiated into The Order of Bards Ovates & Druids at Beltane on Glastonbury Tor, then when I was 36 I was asked to lead the Order, which I have been doing now for 20 years.
I've written a number of books on Druidry and two on the territory where Druidry and Wicca meet: 'Druidcraft' and 'The DruidCraft Tarot' (with my partner Stephanie) .
Over the last two decades the Order has grown enormously. We now have about 10, 000 members in countries all over the world and a distance-learning programme that is mailed out in English, French, German, Dutch and Czech.
A great bunch of people are involved in running the Order - its monthly podcast, camps, magazines and so on, and I see my role as supporting and facilitating a group that has grown over these last two decades in extraordinary ways. Having followed a guru for a while I have seen the dangers of personality cults and the way in which reverence for a guru can sap people's initiative. But I have also noticed that we all need direction and help on our spiritual path and that good leadership involves helping people but getting out of the way so that they can be empowered to grow and develop in their own unique way rather than in somebody's shadow.
Nature spiritualities like Druidry and DruidCraft place Nature at the centre of the spiritual path, not another human being, which is what makes them so appealing!
