April's Profile...
I am a Wiccan writer in Tucson, Arizona, with a wide range of interests. My articles and presentations have been on topics as diverse as "the roles of rationality and nonrational experience in Paganism"; "Mozart and mysticism"; "Spirituality and birthparenting" (that is, choosing to place a baby in an open adoption, and discovering the archetype of the Goddess-as-Birthmother) ; "Paganism and the Right to Die"; and various others. I have also written poetry, in free verse and in rhyme, celebrating Nature and Pagan spirituality.
In October 2007 I was thrilled to become one of 13 finalists in BBI Media's Pagan fiction contest. This means that my story, "A Valkyrie Among Jews, " was published in "The Pagan Anthology of Short Fiction, " which Llewellyn released in October 2008. I was moved when one of the editors of PanGaia told me she had enjoyed the story! That is my life's ultimate goal: to give someone a gift of beauty.
At PantheaCon in February 2008, I was even more moved, and felt privileged, when "A Valkyrie Among Jews" was awarded the First Prize in BBI Media's Fiction Contest. I can only hope this is a major stepping stone toward a career as a writer.
Since then, I have published poems on Dark Poetry and elsewhere, and also some more short fiction, usually on the subject of good-hearted vampires: their artistic lives and romances.
One of my current projects may be almost heretical (to whatever extent there can be such a thing) within Wicca: a long essay, possibly becoming a slim book, challenging the wisdom of reincarnation as a Wiccan tenet. The story of my personal spiritual journey--from strong believer to near-certain disbeliever--it reveals the problems with attempting to heal our fear of death by believing in an afterlife. Far more secure, and arguably even more beautiful, is the idea that death is eternal sleep--and while we sleep, our energies are recycled by Nature, forever nourishing new life in all its forms.
