Seercat's Profile...
My belief structure is not quite Wiccan, but rather is a combination of New Age, Buddhist and Neo-Pagan beliefs. About the only thing that I draw from Christianity is a belief that we are indeed the children of God (however one chooses to conceive of the Ultimate) . We are in the process of becoming like God, but we are well short of the end result.
The cycle of death and rebirth is like a furnace crucible, where our souls are being forged. Each life brings us a little bit closer to the point when we begin to be god like. It may take awhile to achieve but we have a long time in which to work it.
What brought me to this conclusion? The problem of Heaven in short. Many people are familiar with the problem of Hell. Why would a good and benevolent God maintain a torture chamber, in which he (I'm using the male pronoun here to describe this Deity since this is a Judeo-Christian-Islamic, JCI, god) would subject those of his creations to eternal pain and despair. The problem of Hell is one of proportionality. Why would God want to cause infinite pain and suffering for a finite amount of misconduct? Even Hitler, goes the argument, caused finite pain and suffering to his fellow humans. Why could he not atone for this behavior by spending a lifetime in suffering in Hell for each life that he caused to be taken. In just a few billion years he would be even, a drop in the bucket of eternity.
The Roman Catholic response to this is interesting reading, which I leave to you if you are interested, just google "problem of Hell." You can google "problem of Heaven" just as well, yet if you do, you are likely to come away either confused or shaken. No one can explain why God would give some people infinite peace, No one that I've found really tries to. There is just this talk about the infinite nature of God's love, but no rational explaination. There are a lot of arguments about the nature of Heaven, but not much on why God would want to make an infinite gift of bliss to a favored few.
Call me crass, but I always look a gift horse in the mouth. It's a good habit to get into, many so called gifts can be more of a problem than blessing (the Trojan Horse comes to mind) . I've got to ask, "what's in it for God?" After all, if you believe the Monotheistic Doctrines, God created Heaven, Hell, and the Earth (by which we mean the whole physical universe) .
This seem to me to be quite a bit of work. Not only did God create these realms, but it is by his will that they continue to exist and function. Yes, I know, God is infinite (as it is believed by JCI adherents) , so he can do anything. This is an axiom, an unproven statement which is assumed to be true. But why does God need to be infinite?
Can not God be merely an extremely advanced being who has gain knowledge of, and control over, the mechanisms of reality? After all, isn't a 60 year old CEO of a major corporation nearly godlike when compared to a new born baby? How about to a just fertilized egg?
However if God isn't infinite, the work of keeping the universe going, as well as some kind of afterlife, needs even more explanation. I do believe that the Ultimate is rational, so why would he/she do this thing, this creation we like to call home? Well, what if the whole universe is a womb. A womb for godlings.
This would explain a lot. The reason for evil, the rational for why we are not immediately pulled into Heaven, as some questioners of Heaven's validity believe a just and compassionate God would do. The world is a forge of souls. We are being hammered, tempered, made more powerful each lifetime. Although each life may only see an incremental increase in our soul's journey to becoming god like, it is the path that we are on.
If the Ultimate being who made the universe isn't infinite, but merely gargantuan in power, ability, and understanding, then someday we will arrive at the same state. It is only if you insist that God is infinite that really difficult questions state to crop up about his rational for our existence, if not outright questions regarding God's sanity.
That's what I believe.
