Magickal Path: Pagan Priest & Zen Buddhist
Age Group: Adult
Sun Sign: Leo
Occupation: Author & Spiritual Director
Gender: Male
Located in: Sacramento, California

Likes: ~Autumn Winds, Winter Snowfall, Spring Flowers, and Summer Bonfires, ~Engaging the world rooted in the Shinto belief in kami, the spirits that live in all things., ~Finding my way, and losing it, and finding it again., ~That first glimpse of a bring moon in a dark sky, peeking through the clouds, which always reminds me of the allure and mystery that first brought me to craft and the satisfaction of being witchy., ~Pumpkins, cauldrons, brooms, herbs, bubbling concoctions, tarot cards and all the other stereotypical accoutrements.

Dislikes: The normal stuff: unnecessary violence, active and persistent intolerance, willful ignorance, and inequality.

Kai Koumatos's Profile...

Trained in Anthropology and Feminist Studies, I am a public witch, an emotional healer, and a lifelong learner. I am a writer, a photographer, and a long time activist. I braved the world of liberal Christianity to earn a Master's degree in Divinity at the Pacific School of Religion, which was a very rewarding and enlightening experience. I also accidentally became a Buddhist when I was there. I'm an Interfaith Minister now, using the spiritual skills of paganism to provide tarot readings and spiritual direction to people of all faith traditions.

My own craft owes a great debt to the pragmatism of Scott Cunningham (bless his soul) . In the past I have worked primarily with Hindu and Pre-Hellenic / Mediterranean deities. I have incorporate a great deal of Taoism and Shinto into my theology and have been a practicing Zen Buddhist for about five years now. I sharply reject the male/female dualism that is prevalent in pagan communities and instead embrace deities and ritual forms that challenge and blend gender roles and identity.

In the early 2000's, my circle, The Rising Wind, created an online pagan magazine of the same name for a few years. Through my pagan education and adventures, I have pagan activist ties to Starhawk, lovely friends in the Reclaiming community (mostly North Bay these days) , and spent years in circles with Katrina and Eric Rasbold - founders of the CUSP tradition in the Sacramento Area. My earliest pagan education came through the The Mystic Moon in San Diego, run by the irreplaceable Scott Rhodes and Judith Wise Rhodes, whose example of community and craft leadership will forever guide my spiritual path.
