Katie Koumatos's Profile...
Trained in Anthropology and Feminist Studies, I am a open witch, an emotional healer, and a lifelong student/teacher. I am a published writer and accomplished photographer, a long time activist, and a fat studies scholar. I left the public life of craft almost ten years ago to put time towards my own life. I am now returning, with a healed relationship with the followers of Christ and a desire to work in Interfaith communities. I will be beginning my seminary education this spring at Pacific School of Religion where I hope to complete a MA in Divinity and eventually become an ordained minister.
MY CRAFT My own craft owes a great debt to the pragmatism of Scott Cunningham (bless his soul) . I work heavily with Hindu Deities as well as having specific relationships with God Forms from the Pre-Hellenic Mediterranean Traditions, Irish Pantheon, and most recently, the Egyptian Goddess, Sekhmet. I incorporate a great deal of Taoism and Shinto into my spiritual practices. As a queer cis-woman, I also sharply reject the male/female dualism that is prevalent in pagan communities and instead embrace deities and ritual forms that challenge and blend gender roles and identity. In its time, my circle was very progressive with energy theory; we played and experimented with the development/maintence of sacred space, ritual form and function, and the use of the year long planting/harvesting ritual.
HISTORY/LINEAGE My circle, The Rising Wind, created an online pagan magazine of the same name that ran in 2003 and posted essays and articles on Witchvox. I have ties to Starhawk and the Reclaiming community in the Bay, Katrina and Eric Rasbold and the CUSP tradition in Sacramento, and in my earliest years as a witch, The Mystic Moon in San Diego, run by the irreplaceable Scott Rhodes and Judith Wise Rhodes, whose example of community and craft leadership will forever color my spiritual path.
I also have an spiritual blog, Pagan on the Pulpit, which chronicles my adventures in the seminary. You can find it here: http://paganonthepulpit.blogspot.com
