Born and raised in New York, I moved to Los Angeles in 1981.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude from a small Pentecostal seminary in Holyoke, MA in 1980, and became a teacher and licensed exhorter in two Christian denominations (Pentecostál & ICM/MCC) . It was here, in California, that I was exposed to extreme moral and ethical corruption within the institutional church, and to actual religious scholarship as well. These two things shook my belief system to the very core, resulting in my complete abandonment of right-wing Christian fundamentalism.
For over three decades I have dedicated much time, effort and money to the exploration of diverse religions, teachings, disciplines, sects and organizations; this search inexorably led me to abandon all fundamentalistic and authoritarian belief systems.
The spiritual faith and praxis that I have come to embrace is inclusive, universalistic, pluralistic, egalitarian, multi-cultural, progressive, empowering, outspoken, cosmic, celebrative, embodied, worldly, sensual, fun, life affirming and life enhancing.
I am gay, and in August of 2012, my spouse, Shawn, and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary; we have been together for 22 years.
