Tony Griego's Profile...
I'm a retired police officer of almost 32 years of service. I have followed the Pagan path for about 18 years. My main project now is to get some type of memorial acknowledgement for Alice Young. It is believed that Alice Young was the first person executed in the New World for Witchcraft. She was from Windsor, Connecticut and was executed in Hartford on May 26, 1647. At present the town of Windsor only has a room named after her in the Town Hall. Very little is known about her. The only information I have found in any detail was in the book, "Entertaining Satan" by John Putnam Demos on page 505. Sadly our Pagan community doesn't seem to recognize those who suffered or were put to death for the alledged crime of Witchcraft. Most American books make no mention of our Pagan history in New England. Even when John Winthrop of Connecticut noted in 1647 that, "One of Windsor arraigned and excecuted at Hartford for a Witch" he left out her name. Over two hundred years later it was discovered written on the inside cover of the Town Clerk's records who the person was that John Winthrop made reference to. Mathew Grant wrote, "May 26, 47 Alse Young hanged." Starting in 2006 I have been working with other Pagans to try to get offical pardons for what we believe to be eleven people executed in Connecticut for Witchcraft. Alse Young is included in this project. We hope to reach our goal in 2009 where once again the resolution to clear the names of all eleven people executed will be presented before the Connecticut State Legislature. If the resolution is passed in 2009 we hope to then work on a monument in Hartford to recognize those who died during the delusion. Both Pagans and Christians need to understand that these eleven were executed because of fear that existed during those times in New England. Those accused of Witchcraft in Massachusetts, Virginia and New Hampshire have already had their names cleared. Connecticut needs to follow suit. The resolution did not pass in 2009 as the Legislature ran out of time to vote. It will be again submitted in 2010. The eleven names of those executed have been added to the new resolution. We will not forget or give up . December 18, 2011. We have again contacted our elected officials to once again try to get the above Resolution passed in the Connecticut State Legislature.
Update: We have submitted a Governors Proclamation to CT. Governor Dannel P. Malloy requesting a Governors Proclamation that would clear the names of our 11 executed Witches. Awaiting a reply 6-30-12
