AwenSpirit's Profile...
Hail and Greetings! I am a Druid Apprentice, currently undergoing my 366 days of spiritual training. I am also a Pan-flutist, Poet, and a throat-singer. Throat singing is sometimes called "overtone singing" - being able to sing 2 or more notes at once. I am most familiar with Tuvan throat singing - Tuva is a small territory (I believe a Russian Republic) just north of Mongolia. There are 7 different types of Tuvan throat singing: khoomei, sygyt, dag (mountain) kargyraa, khovu (steppe) kargyraa, ezenggileer, khoomei borbangnadyr, and chylandyyk.
As of now, I can do sygyt, which produces a high pitched, whistling overtone, dag kargyraa, the deepest of all the styles, khovu kargyraa, khoomei, and chylandyyk, a combination of sygyt and kargyraa. Both types of kargyraa and chylandyyk make three notes at once: the fundamental, the subtone, and the overtone. The fundamental pitch is created by vibration of the vocal folds, which we use in everyday speech. The subtone is formed when the false vocal folds, which lie directly above the vocal folds, oscillate; this produces a tone exactly one octave below the fundamental pitch. With both types of kargyraa, the overtone is created by moving the mouth to make vowel sounds. In chylandyyk, lightly placing the tongue's tip on the roof of the mouth and moving it slightly forward or backward modulates the pitch of the overtone. This technique is also used in sygyt.
This all may seem a bit complicated at first, and rightfully so - it usually takes weeks just to be able to make the false vocal folds vibrate. But some people are able to do this within a few hours. Personally, it took me about a week and a half to get the false vocal folds to oscillate, and it took yet more weeks to be able to keep the subtone consistent. Overtone singing can be applied to magic and meditation. Just as an altar bell can be used to clear away harmful energy, so can the tones produced by throat singing. During meditation, it can be used to alter consciousness and raise one's vibration.
I have become an accomplished Poet, writing sonnets (you could say it's an obsession) , a slam, and free-style works. I owe it all to Ms.Casey, the most brilliant teacher anyone could have. She taught the Poetry class (my senior year of high school) , and I wish I could take it again because it was so fun. We went to the Dodge Poetry Festival In Newark, NJ, and I recommend everyone interested/passionate about Poetry and-or if you're a Poet yourself to go to the Festival, which is held in October every year. Unfortunately, I don't have any of my poems "officially" published (yet ;) ) , but of course, you don't have to have your works published to be considered a great Poet. Emily Dickinson is a perfect example - none of her pieces were published until after her death, when her brother found bundles upon bundles of her work in old boxes, and from reading her poems, he realized what a brilliant Poet she was. However, it is better to get your works published than not to, because it not only makes you known in the Poetry community, but it is a wonderful accomplishment. Plus, you will be able to earn some income - just don't think that you'll be able to make a living from it.
When it comes to magic, I have to say that I do most outdoors (weather permitting) where I can connect with Nature more directly. I am also very much a Water-Air person. I love the ocean and the cooling tranquility of Water. Instead of using candles, I work around a sacred fire during my outdoor rites.
I was born to a Catholic family, but in middle school, I realized that christianity was not my Path - so I started exploring other religions. It started with the books "Your Book of Shadows" by Patricia Telesco, "Magical Herbalism" by Scott Cunningham, and "Crystal Healing", by Luc Bourgault. I did more searching and felt very connected with Druidry. I wasn't comfortable in converting until August 2011. In a guided meditation, I was touched by the Goddess, Cerridwen, and so I made the decision to commit to the 366 days to become a Druid. I always felt that it was my spiritual calling, but I needed that spark of Inspiration I received from that meditation.
Anyhow, I am not "officially" a member of any Order yet, though I attend Wiccan sabbats provded by a nearby Coven - we do, after all, celebrate the same festivals :) . I do hope to start my own Grove sometime, but for now, I'm Solitary, mostly following the Order of Bards Ovates and Druids (OBOD) and the Henge of Keltria. I am most connected to the Bard grade of Druidry, though I have a good knowledge of (and a passion for) herb lore and Philosophy. Blessed be times Three! /l\
