I am a New Orleans native who was mostly raised by a Catholic/hoodoo grandmother who talked to the moon, prayed to Jesus, had altars full of candles, and read cards, tea leaves, and auras for a living. I've been "different" my entire life when it comes to spiritual beliefs; I've never fit into any particular classification.
It is my belief that witchcraft is not a religion - rather it is a way of life, a manner of being, a part of the totality of who I am, and is something to be lived every day. I personally do not follow any organized religion's path, but it stands to reason that anyone can be a witch, be they born or called - Christians, Wiccans, Muslims, Jews, Athiests, etc - and it is up to the individual person to work through the issues that may come about due to combining witchcraft with religious restrictions.
As most things non-Christian make some people uncomfortable, I tend to keep my views to myself unless I'm with witchy folk. I've evolved my own unique style of witchiness, and I'm not ashamed of who I am but rather have come to a point in my life where I'm content with it and don't feel the need to defend or prove myself to anyone. It's not worth the emotional drain and I've gotten selfish enough in my middle age that I prefer to use that energy on things that please me.
I am the Founder and Coordinator of the New Orleans Witches' Ball. I am also the owner of Witchy Living, a small onine shop for witches and pagans, featuring 100% hand-made products.
