Steven Bragg's Profile...

I'm known within my Vodou family as Sen Josef, formally Houngan Twa Pote, and in Palo as Zarabanda Tronco Firme ba Cuenda Nsila a la Media Noche Vira Mundo.

I began actively seeking out spiritual practices different from the one I was raised in (which was Pentacostal Christian) over twenty years ago. I started out as an eclectic Wiccan, having read lots of books and practicing on my own. In 2000 I graduated with my degree in philosophy and world religious studies, after which I moved to New Orleans and began a master's program in religious studies.

Soon after moving here I met Houngan Aboudja of TX and Mambo Marie Carmel of Long Island, NY and Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and my life took an unexpected turn into the world of Afro-Diasporic Religions under the careful guidance of Houngan Aboudja, who had founded the Flower of Abomey Society here in New Orleans. In 2003 I traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti and underwent the kanzo cycle of initiation as an Hounsi Kanzo into Sevis Ginen (Haitian Vodou) . In 2005, following Hurricane Katrina, I relocated to the Boston area of Massachusetts, and in 2007 I returned to Haiti with my mother, Mambo Marie Carmel, leader of Societe La Fraicheur Belle Fleur Guinea, to once again undergo the kanzo and receive the asson, making the rank of Houngan Asogwe (High Priest) .

I returned to my spiritual home of New Orleans in 2010, as the Mexican folk saint La Santisima Muerte was coming into my life, and I founded a chapel in her honor, The New Orleans Chapel of the Santisima Muerte. With the permission of all my saints, spirits, and ancestors in 2012 I began a series of trips to Miami, FL to be made Rayado (scratched or initiated) into Palo Mayombe Corta Lima in the munanso Zarabanda Rompe Monte ba Quenda Nsila. In 2013 I received my nganga and was made Padre Nganga. My munanso is Zarabanda Tronco Firme a la Media Noche Vira Mundo. Later in 2013 I received my ellekes, warriors, and the hand of Orunla in the Lukumi religion from the same house in Miami.

I also honor my Pagan and Christian ancestors of the South (USA) , Ireland, Great Britain, and Scandinavia.
