Aethera's Profile...
I was raised as loosely Christian as I think is possible. My family was far more involved in the community aspects of a church than the religion itself, and from an early age (about 7) I had the general understanding that religion was about people and what they thought. I knew it had to do with God and beliefs, but that's not what it felt like.
When I reached high school I started having some serious medical problems. I attempted to follow a Christian path of prayer and praise, but I couldn't find it in myself after awhile. It just felt hypocritical to be speaking words that I didn't truly feel.
In the few years of college that I accomplished (before dropping out due to said medical problems) I finally realized that spirituality and religion were two different concepts. (Perhaps I should specify organized religion.) I started looking at all the personal paths I could find, both in organized religions and unorganized traditions.
It was almost 2009 when I finally came across Scott Cunningham's "Wicca". I had gone through the major traditions that I knew of (that sounds like I flipped through pages and threw them away, but I can't think of a better way to express it) , and I was startled by how much Cunningham's book described the personal tenets (those that I had been able to define) of my own spirituality.
I don't know if I am a true Wiccan, I haven't had any contact with others with whom I could discuss my beliefs. Nor has my preoccupation with physical/medical realities always allowed me to practice as I would like. But I do know that I have felt more at peace and more in tune with the world since I began practicing Wiccan traditions.
The Goddess smiled on me in March of 2009, and it's an experience I can't begin to explain or understand... yet I know I made a connection that will last me the rest of my life and beyond. I began writing down my experiences, any rituals I created on the fly, and so on... I can see myself organizing my personal path in the future without the constraints of labeling it "Wiccan", "NeoPagan", or anything at all.
Additionally, I've truly enjoyed a folklore class (Spring 2011) at Harvard University night school entitled "Witchcraft and Charm Magic" about the history of religion and magic (and human nature) starting in the medieval era. It's really opened my eyes about learning what led to certain beliefs (or intolerances) , and the progression of events that led to the current neo-pagan movement.
Please feel free to email me if you're in my area and/or open to discussing spiritual beliefs. I use various forms of online communication, but I'd rather not post them openly.
