Caroline Kenner's Profile...
Hello, I call myself a Washington Witchdoctor, which is a tongue in cheek description of my path as a Pagan shamanic healer and Witch. I began practicing Paganism in 1984, as a student of Andras Corban Arthen of the EarthSpirit Community in Massachusetts. After graduate school in Boston, I moved home to Washington, DC, and I have been part of the Washington-Baltimore Pagan community since 1987.
I am a graduate of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies' Three Year Program in advanced shamanism and shamanic healing. I have also graduated from Sandra Ingerman's Two Year Shamanic Teacher Training Program, as well as other shamanic education programs of shorter duration. Studying shamanism with Michael Harner and Sandra Ingerman at the Omega Institute has changed my life and deepened my spiritual path immeasurably.
I also work with Sandra Ingerman's Medicine for the Earth material. Medicine for the Earth is a method of purifying water with spiritual healing. We have obtained changes of up to 3 pH points (towards neutral) in water deliberately polluted with acidic or basic substances. I am truly inspired by this work. See www. shamanicvisions. com/ingerman. html for more information about Sandra Ingerman's transmutation work, or read my first Witchvox article, From the Waterfront.
Another part of my path is working with the media to correct misconceptions about Paganism, Witchcraft, Santeria, Haitian Voudou, New Orleans Voodoo, Druidry, Asatru and Vanatru, and all of the magical and Earth religions. I have a professional background in public relations, and I have worked on media activism for the Pagan community since the early 1990s. Religious freedom demands constant vigilance.
I am initiated into diverse magical paths. Within Wicca, I am a member of The Assembly of the Sacred Wheel, Order of Wandering Stars. I am working with the Assembly to raise funds for The New Alexandrian Library, an esoteric library worthy of its glorious name, which is breaking ground right now in March 2011. See www.sacredwheel.org/nal.html for more information about the New Alexandrian Library.
I am also part of the magical family of internationally renowned Wiccan authors and teachers Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone. I have studied with Janet since the early 1990s, on Janet and Stewart Farrar's first trip to America. I met Gavin when he joined the Farrar writing team, and entwined his life with Janet and Stewart. Janet and Gavin have been extremely supportive, and I am proud to call them my teachers, my mentors and my friends. They live outside Kells, Ireland, where I have been privileged to visit them on several occasions. I am one of their four American third degree initiates, in their Progressive Witchcraft tradition. For more information about Janet and Gavin, including their teaching schedule in North America, see http://www.callaighe.com/
In addition to my European Ancestral Pagan paths, I have received initiatory ceremonies within La Regla de Ocha de Lukumi, also known as Cuban Santeria. I have received the Elekes, the Warriors and two Orishas in the Santo Lavado ceremony. I have also received smaller ceremonies less central to the traditional initiatory path of Santeria. I adore the Orishas passionately and am grateful for their protective presence in my life. I have been learning about the Orishas' many paths and traditions since 1973, when I met Them at The Museum of Mankind in London.
In July of 2011, I was privileged to spend 11 days with the Dalai Lama at Washington, DC's Verizon Center. Along with roughly 20, 000 other participants, I received the Kalachakra Initiation as a blessing. The Dalai Lama inspired me with his message of peace and lovingkindness towards all humanity, and the Kalachakra Initiation was a profound and fascinating experience. The first day of the initiation was His Holiness' birthday. He shared the stage with Martin Luther King III and the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, while Bishop Desmond Tutu was on the jumbotron TV. Wow! Nonviolent Royalty!!
I hold an undergraduate degree in Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College, specializing in New Guinea, Australia and the Pacific Island cultures, and a Master's degree in Communications from Boston University, with a thesis on Political Broadcasting.
Currently, I live in Silver Spring, Maryland, outside the Capital Beltway, in a leafy neighborhood where I can breathe more freely than among the crowds and traffic of downtown DC.
I serve on the board of directors of the Sacred Space Foundation, which produces the Sacred Space conference annually. I have served on the Boards of Directors of five local Pagan organizations over the years, starting in the early 1990s. And I participate in many activities presented by various groups in the Washington-Baltimore Pagan community.
