My path draws on many influences, including Humanism, Buddhism, and Ar nDraiocht Fein ("Our Own Druidry") . In the end it is more a kind of natural mysticism seeking to know my home. My motto is "This body, this life, this Earth." A further motto could be "Gift and gratitude for life."
I find the spiritual here in this world, and in each of us. Communion may be cultivated through ritual, but eating a meal, talking with friends, and teaching English can all be sacred too. That is what "earth-centered" means to me: centered in down-to-earth ordinary concerns, even if the means to the end involves spiritual journeys far from the ordinary world.
I use the term "Humanistic Paganism" to describe this path. It's a way of life dedicated to responsible action, mythological symbolism, knowledge as verified through the five senses, and wonder.
Lately I have been realizing where I'm headed as a person, and there's been a wake-up call. A few times in my life I have met old men and women who engage me like we have no age difference, who listen closely, who smile with compassion, who help me along, and who laugh without a care in the world. I've always felt that if I end up like that, I will have lived life well. But as each year passes I realize more and more that I'm not going to become that way without effort. I have to change course, and transform myself into that.
