I came to Wicca in search of a spiritual path that would accept me without condemning me for love. As a child growing up, I was constantly reminded by Christianity (and "good Christians") that being gay was a sin. Despite being surrounded by a community of Christians who bullied me, beat me up, and harassed me for my sexuality, I found an unending support within my family.
When I told my mom that I couldn't consider myself a Christian, because I didn't think I was going to Hell simply for loving someone else and that I had found a religion that supported me just as I was, she was overjoyed. When I told her that religion was Wicca and I declared myself a witch, her face was priceless. For a moment, I was worried about what she might say or think, but before I could begin defending my choice, she had her purse in hand and was pulling me out the door. "Well … she said, a witch needs supplies. Doesn't he?" She took me shopping for my first set of magickal tools right then and there.
That was in 1996. I spent 13 years studying on my own, researching different topics that interested me, mostly collecting spells and getting a concrete understanding of the mechanics of how to work them. In 2009, I joined the Black Forest Clan, and began my official clergy training so that I could take my spiritual studies to the next level. By 2011, I had earned my 3rd degree, and was actively teaching my own students in Coven of the Midnight Leviathan.
After my 3rd degree, I really began to connect with The Horned God on a more intimate level. Up till that point, most (if not all) of my spirituality revolved around the Goddess. However, when The Horned God appeared to me, there was denying it. Durham is a city of over 200, 000 people, and I saw an 8 point buck standing in my neighbor's back yard. To my mind, that was definitely a sign. In that same week, I found books on Cernunnos that answered questions I had been asking for years, and my dreams had me engaging the God in ways I had never experienced before. I finally embraced both sides of my spirituality as a witch, and I finally felt accepted by the masculine force.
If I had to pinpoint what opened the door to this wonderful experience, I would say it was one haunting question that I could not escape. After my 3rd degree, I began asking myself: Where is the gay face of god? I wanted to find gay mythology. I wanted to see gay relationships honored on the wheel of the year. The female mysteries were publicly advertised in Wicca (consider Dianic Wicca) , but where were the male mysteries accounted for? Where were the gay specific part of the male mysteries? One question seemed to follow another, and, as I researched to find answers, I uncovered more information than I could have ever hoped for with that first question.
Ultimately, since 2011, I have dedicated my life to Wicca. I have trained my students (both male and female) within in Coven of the Midnight Leviathan, but I have also begun training gay and bisexual male students within a separate coven, focused exclusively on exploring the male mysteries from a gay male perspective. While Midnight Leviathan is based in Durham, NC and we meet in a physical location, my gay male coven meets online for now until my first set of students take on students of their own. When that happens, we will have covens in offline locations as well.
Whether you are male or female, gay or straight, in Durham or some place else in the world, if you would like to study witchcraft, the occult, and magick, contact me. If you are a straight man or a woman and you are not in Durham, NC, contact me any way. Black Forest Clan has covens all over the country in Canada, and in Europe. If I can help connect you with a teacher in your area, I would be more than happy to do so. If you are a gay Wiccan man and you would like to explore your spirituality, embrace your sacred sexuality, and circle with other gay men in a close-knit community of fellow witches, please contact me regardless of where you are located.
